[Natsumi Kyouno cosplay] The Witch of Date A Live: Guangzhou Firefly ACG Expo Record

I shot this Natsumi Kyouno set (Natsumi Kyouno cosplay from Date A Live) at the Guangzhou Firefly ACG Expo in July. For the lighting setup, I used a Jinbei HD250max key light with an 80cm octagonal softbox, triggered by a Jinbei Q7III Sony-version trigger, paired with the Sony A7 IV straight out of camera; the overall lighting performance was remarkably consistent.

The deep blue and orange color-blocked design of this outfit created striking contrast under natural daylight, but also increased the difficulty of lighting. In particular, the semi-sheer Stockings with star motifs easily blew out with harsh white reflections if we weren't careful. To preserve the sheer skin-tone texture of the Stockings and the fine star prints, the key light position was adjusted several times before finally settling on an upper-diagonal angle. The 80cm octabox provided an ideal surface area with soft, even illumination—lighting the legs evenly without creating unwanted reflections on the glass windows, while beautifully preserving the metallic sheen of the gold trims, star charms, and waist chains. Highlight roll-off was natural without harsh shadows, rendering skin texture smoothly.

Foot traffic at the convention was immense, making it challenging to find a quiet corner with floor-to-ceiling windows and manageable ambient light. We designed poses that accentuated the character's personality—such as straddling the broom prop with one leg raised in Photo 1, or resting my chin on my hands by the windowsill—which effectively highlighted leg lines and the long tail cape behind me. The chunky black heels accented with deep blue ankle bows nicely flattered the calf proportions.

Since outdoor natural light served as ambient lighting, balancing the key-to-background light ratio during setup was essential. The Sony A7 IV boasts excellent straight-out-of-camera color fidelity, saving significant post-processing grading time and enabling same-day photo delivery at the expo. The outfit features numerous details, such as scalloped wavy lace along the hat brim, chest pendants, and waist chains, requiring care not to distort them with overly wide movements. The broom prop was quite long and notably heavy to hold; during shooting, I was grateful to friends who helped pass props and adjust my skirt. Documenting this look was a truly special experience that delivered results I'm very satisfied with.
