[Remilia cosplay] Touhou Project: Dream of the Scarlet Devil Mansion

For this Touhou Project Remilia cosplay photoshoot, there are many insights to share from planning and preparation to the final images. First is the costume: the pink dress was custom-made by a tailor, with every layer of lace on the hem and collar hand-sewn on. It is not light, and styling it took considerable time. The red ribbon headwear is also a crucial detail in recreating this character. Paired with red-soled leather shoes and White stockings, it formed a visually complete color palette. To fit the character's temperament, I specifically trimmed the blue wig and adjusted the positioning of the bangs.

The shooting environment was set in a vintage study room, perfectly matching the character's background setting. The lighting on-site mainly utilized distinctly layered warm side-lighting to add rich texture to the costume details. The crouching pose in Photo 1 really tested body control; to convey an elegant demeanor, I had to hold this posture for a prolonged period with thigh and calf muscles constantly tensed, while slightly lifting my chin and balancing the pink lace parasol half-raised and half-leaned—any wrong angle would cause unwanted reflections or reveal backstage props. Even trickier, because the skirt was so wide, it often caught on my legs or the chair edge, requiring non-stop fabric adjustments during this shot. Fortunately, the photographer was very experienced and kept guiding the rhythm of facial expression transitions between takes.

For Photo 2, I opted for a floating composition, which required engaging both the core and legs to maintain stability in mid-air. To achieve that ethereal yet eerie magical atmosphere, a dark background was chosen for the venue, with colorful bokeh spots and dark bat elements added during the shoot. To accentuate the leg lines wearing high heels and White stockings, I repeatedly adjusted the leg angles to ensure they looked elongated without appearing stiff under the natural gravity of the skirt hem. Holding a red apple in hand was meant to boost color contrast and playful intrigue, showing the thorough thought behind every detail.

In post-processing, the focus was on refining skin texture to ensure the subject appeared translucent in the dark setting while fully preserving the lace texture of the costume. This shoot made me realize the physical and technical demands of portraying such high-difficulty characters—from muscle control to expression management and costume maintenance. Although it was exhausting and my legs grew numb from crouching, seeing the final atmosphere in the finished shots made every bit of effort worth it. This is exactly why I love the Touhou Project series so much: its meticulous attention to detail constantly elevates one's understanding of cosplay.
