Today in the studio, we captured this Touhou Project Japanese-style aesthetic. The moment this Red and gold furisode was slipped on, its substantial weight was immediately palpable. The set mirrored a traditional Japanese courtyard and tatami washitsu room, with dark pebbles strewn across the straw mats, soft pink cherry blossom boughs cascading from above, and the amber glow of paper lanterns imbuing the scene with cozy warmth.
To prevent the red-and-gold colorway from appearing mature or dated, I invested careful thought into coordination. For the base layer, I selected an off-white crossover collar beneath a multi-tiered white lace ruffled miniskirt to inject youthful, airy sweetness into the silhouette. A slender crimson cord was tied at the waist, adorned with a lush cluster of verdant foliage props whose vivid red-green contrast caught the eye instantly. The wig was a warm chestnut-brown long straight style, detailed with thin side accent braids for playful texture. Two oversized red ribbon bows edged in delicate white lace crowned the hair, flanked by golden tassel hairpins that gently swayed with every movement of my head. For makeup, earth tones grounded the eyeshadow, enriched by blended deep crimson liner and hazel-brown contact lenses to effortlessly bridge opulent splendor with classical elegance.
The shooting workflow was more physically demanding than expected. We utilized varied narrative props—alternating between an oiled red paper parasol and slender black fan ribs. The paper parasol had considerable heft, requiring continuous wrist tension to hold it at flattering angles. The furisode sleeves were extraordinarily voluminous; every time I sat down, I had to meticulously smooth out the gilded foil prints to avoid unsightly creasing. Because the lower hem was styled as a miniskirt, it offered wonderful freedom for seated stances. Sitting sideways across the wooden floorboards with one leg extended and the other bent allowed me to showcase graceful leg lines naturally without feeling forced. On my feet were white ankle socks and black platform geta clogs finished with red bow thongs; navigating in such high wooden platforms required leaning my center of gravity forward to avoid losing balance.
The lighting design for this shoot was especially creative. The photographer positioned a warm golden key light to the direct side to simulate sunset, illuminating the red textiles and making the metallic gold foil stampings gleam brilliantly. The foreground cherry blossom branches were thrown into soft backlight, turning translucent pink and creating a natural, ethereal frame. In the background, teal-green paper parasols and dark potted pine bonsais visually grounded the expansive warmth of the red and gold tones.
Every time I shoot an elaborate, layered costume like this, it feels like an intense physical workout. From dressing and rearranging hemlines to calibrating parasol angles and holding sustained seated poses, patience is essential. Yet seeing the vivid clash of red, gold, pink, and black on the camera monitor made every bit of effort completely worthwhile. Every gesture and prop grip was dialed in to deepen the storytelling in this Japanese style cosplay and Putao cosplay shoot.
