This time, I'm sharing a cosplay photoset of Remilia in a Touhou Project fan-concept design. The shoot took place at night; because the character is canonically a vampire, a nighttime setting naturally enhances the ambiance far more than daytime, aligning seamlessly with the enigmatic atmosphere of the Scarlet Devil Mansion.
First, let's talk about the styling coordination. The look is anchored in a classic red-and-black palette. The upper bodice is tailored from wine-red velvet fabric, which naturally catches a subtle, luminous sheen under nighttime lighting. The chest features a red ribbon bow and black lace trimming, paired with a black leather waist corset that visually cinches the waistline. The skirt treatment is one of my personal favorites: an outer layer of black gossamer tulle woven with spiderweb patterns drapes over the bottom, revealing the delicate lace lining underneath whenever I walk or lift the hem, creating rich visual depth. For the wig, I selected wavy silver-white curls styled with plenty of voluminous bounce, with the bangs trimmed just enough to drape over the eyebrows. Paired with crimson contact lenses and red-toned eyeshadow, the facial makeup was set with relatively high color saturation. Additionally, the bat wings and pointed elf-like ears served as quintessential character hallmarks; the skeletal frame of the wings was firmly anchored, but their weight was noticeable, requiring careful adjustment of the harness angles to prevent them from dragging backward.
To enrich the visual storytelling, I brought along a red apple, dark red roses, and a peculiar spear glowing with red light. The spear was originally a raw prop blank, which I retrofitted using translucent resin components and embedded LED light strips. In low-light settings, it illuminated on its own, allowing the photographer to capture a concentrated energy effect through the lens. When striking poses, photographer Luo Ling guided me through numerous experiments to evoke that blend of regal majesty and aristocratic arrogance unique to Remilia. For the shots wielding the spear, I kept my spine straight, dropped my shoulders, and cast a haughty, commanding gaze. Meanwhile, the shots with the apple and roses focused more on interactive storytelling and a subtle touch of nonchalant malice. Handing the apple toward the lens was captured on the fly; because it was positioned so close to the camera, precise facial muscle control was vital to avoid looking stiff.
Night photography certainly came with its share of hurdles. With ambient light strictly limited, the photographer dedicated immense care to the lighting setup to preserve both image crispness and fabric textures. A key light from the front ensured balanced exposure on the face and costume, while warm rim lights from the side and back sculpted sharp silhouette lines. Combined with ambient city bokeh and floating spark effects in the backdrop, the red-and-black contrast stood out with fierce intensity. The temperature was actually quite chilly during the shoot; standing outdoors for hours in this outfit drained my stamina rapidly. The skirt-lifting pose was especially demanding: simultaneously highlighting the pairing of spiderweb stockings with tall black boots while maintaining poised elegance meant my leg muscles remained constantly engaged, all while holding my facial expression steady.
Even though this was a fan-concept design, I stayed true to the canonical hallmarks of the Scarlet Devil Mansion—such as the rose motifs and bat wings—hoping to project a multidimensional character image through the interplay of rich fabric textures and glowing prop effects. Huge thanks to Luo Ling for documenting every subtle nuance. From early wardrobe prep and prop modification to on-set lighting coordination, every single phase was immensely rewarding. I hope everyone enjoys this nighttime photoshoot look.
