Prepping and shooting this set of Kurumi Tokisaki convention photos from October 1st demanded extensive dedication. This black-and-orange gothic lolita gown is packed with intricate detailing: the corset bodice features black lace and criss-cross lacing, highlighted by sparkling rhinestones across the chest. The greatest hurdle lay in the colossal waist bow and tiered ruffled skirts—the black jagged-hem patterns and three tiers of lace frills created stunning dimensionality. To sustain such puff and volume, I layered a white petticoat underneath, requiring me to constantly smooth and monitor the hemline while pacing and spinning to prevent stepping on the fabric.
The wig also underwent specialized structural styling: the blunt fringe bangs and elongated side twin tails were reinforced with rigid internal padding blocks and wrapped in black ribbon ties, ensuring the pigtails held their sharp, angled silhouette during dynamic movements rather than collapsing limply against my body. The makeup centered heavily on highlighting the heterochromia eyes—one crimson and one golden-amber clock eye—which, paired with precise ocular contouring, looked remarkably sharp and vibrant before the camera lens. The black lace choker and orange satin ribbon at the throat resonated harmoniously with the overarching color scheme. On my arms were long black leather sleeves detailed with orange ruffled trims and ribbon lacing, which imposed slight physical restriction on arm motion.
Regarding props, the vintage long-barreled flintlock rifle carried noticeable heft; whether resting it across my shoulder or holding it with both hands, balancing my center of gravity and wrist tension was paramount. A sheathed longsword was also tucked behind the skirt; to avoid the hilt tangling into the lace ruffles, drawing and holding the blade required calculated angles. The sapphire and silver chainlet draping from the waist swung organically with each turn, introducing a touch of fluid kinetic motion.
To showcase this ensemble, I explored diverse poses. Lifting the expansive skirts with both hands to present the intricate patterning is an iconic stance, requiring even arm tension to flare the silhouette gracefully. The spinning capture in Photo 8 was frozen live on site: jumping and twirling while wearing chunky black platform lace-up tall boots while maintaining disciplined facial control was a genuine physical workout. The photographer (@比我還煩) scouted several relatively clean corners around the venue, utilizing overhead hall lighting to bypass cluttered expo booths and dense crowds, achieving crisp, layered chiaroscuro lighting.
Although these are convention photos, donning this attire inspired me to channel that dangerous, enigmatic charisma in both gaze and posture. Standing all afternoon in high-platform boots definitely left my calves aching, and I constantly had to ensure my extra-long twin tails didn't brush against passersby. Yet seeing the fleeting moments frozen by the photographer—particularly the kinetic drama of the billowing skirts—confirmed that this look achieved the fidelity I envisioned. The black-and-orange contrast proved exceptionally striking amidst the convention ambiance. Reviewing the photos and recalling the iterative process of calibrating angles and skirt folds on site made for an immensely fulfilling convention shoot.
