This Liberalio outfit took practically a full month from pattern-making to the final fitting. Today, having some free time, I finally organized the photos taken at the convention to share the details of this restoration process with fellow fans.

The first thing to tackle was that iconic square floating frame on top of the head. To ensure it wouldn't fall off while walking around the convention while keeping it as invisible as possible, I ultimately chose lightweight transparent acrylic material, using high-transparency fishing line to make an invisible hairpin base fixed to the wig. The wig itself also took a long time to trim; the layered light lilac color, along with the curves of the sideburns on both sides, required plenty of hairspray to make the ahoge present this natural yet sharp shape.

The main body of the costume is a bodysuit with a futuristic tech feel. To recreate that curve-hugging effect, the fabric chosen was a micro-elastic faux leather and Lycra blend, and the purple and black lines on the body were applied piece by piece in post; the cross-star decorative piece on the chest was also hand-polished and painted by myself. The pair of huge detached water sleeves on the arms are actually the most effective part of the entire garment. For this layer of chiffon, I searched through several fabric mills before finally selecting a mesh fabric with a slight laser iridescent gloss, which creates a shimmering, watery texture when light hits it, and a strong sense of elegance when moving. As for the ruffled white chiffon around the waist, to maintain fullness, a soft wire lining was actually sewn inside to support the silhouette of the skirt.
The leg portion is paired with opaque thick stockings. This material has a low reflectivity under strong light, perfectly restoring that pure 2D texture, and it has great form-fitting quality without easily wrinkling. As for the centerpiece mecha combat boots on the feet, the sharp toe styling was made by shaping EVA foam and splicing PVC boards, and to keep me from falling while walking, a hidden 15cm chunky heel was built into the inside. In these four photos from different angles, you can also see that I tried various poses. Sitting on a high stool with crossed legs actually requires constant core engagement to maintain an upright posture while keeping the leg lines natural and smooth. The special elevated leg angle in the overhead wide-angle shot of photo 2 was meant to highlight the mecha details of the shoes and the tension of the stockings. That final back-view looking back was actually showcasing the backless cut and the waist-cinching shape at the lower back.

The overhead lighting at the convention venue was quite harsh and tended to flatten subjects, so we specifically adjusted the lighting angles, using side-back lighting to outline the edges and front fill light to brighten the face. Although wearing this heavy equipment throughout the process was a bit tiring, seeing the light, shadow, and details in the final photos made all the preparatory work and effort during the shoot totally worth it.
