The post-processing for this Huohuo convention photo set focused heavily on lighting effects and creating an atmospheric feel. Anyone familiar with the original design knows that the little paper talismans, netherworld ghost fires, and that huge tail around Huohuo are truly the soul of her character. On top of the original photos, I layered cyan-blue ghost fire effects and hand-painted those lively, expressive orange-yellow little paper talismans. To give the image more depth, I also added floating light spots, starlight, and ground magic circle elements, giving the overall picture an intertwined atmosphere of fantasy combat and everyday life. In terms of costume, the dark blue outer garment with golden cloud-patterned edges looks very textured, and the subtle patterns on the fabric refract differently under the light. To capture the character's silly-cute vibe, crafting the wig styling and securing the animal ears on top took quite a bit of thought. The plush animal ears needed to look three-dimensional without appearing stiff. The Tai Chi Bagua pendant on the chest and the golden accessories at the waist are also packed with details; holding that command flag with glowing runes, I felt like I had truly transformed into that somewhat timid intern judge. When waving this flag on-site, I still had to be careful not to hit myself. During the shoot, to reflect Huohuo's slightly timid and unconfident state, the pose design avoided overly broad or dramatic movements. For example, sitting on the ground with crossed legs not only showcased the leg lines but also conveyed the character's personality through slightly retracted shoulders. The action of clenching both hands into fists in front of the chest also captures the character's classic demeanor, and eye contact is crucial, needing to carry a hint of innocence and a desire for protection. The environment of the convention venue was originally a somewhat dark industrial-style hall, which actually provided a great base color for adding post-processing effects. After darkening the background, the high-brightness ghost fires and lighting effects stood out remarkably. That huge blue plush tail was actually quite heavy on-site and required a special waist binder to secure, but the photographed result looks extremely fluffy and soft, echoing the cold tones of the image wonderfully. Special effects aren't just random texture pasting; light direction needs to be considered. For instance, the cyan-blue lighting effect hitting the character's profile and clothes enhances the image's three-dimensionality. To better blend the character and the effects, edge transitions and unified color grading were adjusted repeatedly for a long time. Because there are many special effect elements, layers needed to be separated into foreground and background when handling them—for example, some little paper talismans needed to be in front of the character while others needed to be behind, creating a sense of spatial depth. Although the process was tedious and a single image might take several hours of tinkering in editing software, seeing the final presented effect made all those grueling hours completely worth it. I hope everyone likes this set of convention photos featuring magic special effects.
