I've finally arranged this Touhou Project photoshoot for Seiga Kaku cosplay. Preparing for a character with such deep taoist mastery required significant thought on how to present her distinct aura.
At first glance, many might see the light, layered tulle dress as purely ethereal, but combining that airy elegance with Seiga Kaku's subtle, elusive nature truly tests hair, makeup, and camera atmosphere.
Starting with the wig: the looped bun at the top is the crowning essence of the entire silhouette. To keep it from collapsing on set and maintain crisp 3D contours on camera, I carefully reinforced its internal structure with styling products. The bangs were iteratively trimmed to match her original playful yet inscrutable silhouette.
The dress construction itself is wonderfully intricate. Interweaving abundant sheer tulle and lace, this blue-and-white gown incorporates delicate embroidery on the chest and asymmetrical lace trims along the hem to enhance airiness. I specifically added iridescent fabric under the skirt lining so that beneath warm indoor studio lighting, the blue casts a cool, mystical sheen—fitting the rich, fantastical charm typical of Gensokyo and Touhou Project cosplay.
For props, I chose a blue patterned round fan whose motifs shift with light refraction. The red talisman bound to my leg serves as a standout highlight; as an iconic character accessory, it adds rich visual layers while echoing her lore background.
The location was specifically chosen as a traditional Japanese tatami room, featuring pink cherry blossoms and sliding lattice doors in the background. As sunlight filtered through the lattice onto the bedside where I sat, highlight and shadow struck my legs and skirt hem naturally. Opting for a barefoot pose alongside the fine leg cords and talisman helped anchor composition weight downward; I repeatedly adjusted my seated posture to maintain visual balance.
In front of the camera, I aimed for a poised posture with an upright torso. Holding the fan wasn't merely to mask part of my face for mystery, but to embody a classic Eastern stance. Keeping the wrist relaxed while holding the fan is essential for a natural posture, alongside neatly arranging the broad skirt to avoid cluttered bunches.
The photographer constantly adjusted angles in Cosplay photography to harmonize background cherry blossoms and wooden floor textures. Given the costume's low saturation, post-processing reduced contrast and vibrancy, preserving a dreamlike color filter that feels ethereal and detached from the mortal realm.
However, with the skirt length falling right between knees and calves, sitting down made delicate lace prone to snagging or rumpling under bedding; each posture change meant carefully lifting the outer tulle. Though tedious, seeing the rich garment layering in final shots made every effort worthwhile.
This photo set felt remarkably complete. Sitting in a traditional Japanese room in full attire felt as if stepping across dimensional boundaries into Gensokyo. Deep blue strands, flowing sheer sleeves, leg straps, and talismans bathed in soft light yielded the exact serene, composed, and tranquil aura I envisioned. Characters from Touhou Project possess an inherent tranquil grace, and Seiga Kaku's delicate independence found authentic expression through this real-location shoot.
