This outdoor shoot was located in an open area overgrown with reeds in the suburbs. The sunshine conditions that day were ideal, with large patches of white clouds and a translucent blue in the sky. Occasionally, a gentle breeze swept through, which perfectly matched the dynamic texture I wanted to present this time.
In terms of styling preparation, to align as closely as possible with the setting of the character Kochiya Sanae, a lot of time was spent adjusting layers and tailoring—from the trimming and setting of the light green wig to the handling of a large number of ruffles, lace, and cuff pleats combining white and light green. The details of the headpiece were also reinforced to ensure they wouldn't shift under the outdoor wind. For props, a combination of colorful ribbons and bells was chosen. The ribbon colors were carefully selected to form a visual contrast with the blue of the sky and the surrounding withered grass, while the bells jingling gently in the breeze added a lot of immersion to the shooting process.
During the shoot, the reeds in the foreground were intentionally utilized as a blurred obstruction. This composition style acts as a natural frame, allowing the gaze to naturally focus on the character subject. The photographer adopted a relatively open downward/upward angle, combining it with the background of blue sky and white clouds to extend the sense of space in the frame. The white-toned costume presented a soft reflection under natural light, avoiding the issue of excessive light contrast. In terms of physical movements, I stretched my arms upward, letting the ribbons and bells draw arcs with the wind, a moment that perfectly recorded the dynamic flow of the wind. The lace edges of the skirt hem also naturally whipped up at this moment, showcasing the agility of the costume itself.
As an enthusiast of the Touhou Project series, the trait of being dignified yet filled with vitality inherent in Kochiya Sanae was the core feeling I hoped to grasp in this shoot. To fit this trait, I did not adopt overly exaggerated expressions, but instead chose a quiet, serene demeanor to face the lens. Combined with the wild environment of withered yellow reeds and the crisp sky, I attempted to make the overall atmosphere more natural and authentic. During the shoot, we adjusted positions and angles multiple times, striving to integrate the prop ribbons and bells into the frame's composition rather than letting them exist in isolation. When the angle of sunlight shifted, the position of the reflector was also timely calibrated to ensure even and soft lighting on the face, restoring a natural skin tone.
Although shooting in outdoor natural light brings uncertainties, it also delivered massive surprises. Especially when the cloud layer slightly blocked the sun, the frame produced a very soft diffused reflection effect, which, paired with the grayish-white reeds, made the overall color palette appear exceptionally light and premium. While organizing the props during breaks, the ribbons blown by the wind drifted out gracefully, capturing a few excellent behind-the-scenes moments. The cooperation with the photographer this time was extremely smooth. The other party's understanding of the interaction between light and the environment allowed me to relax better in front of the lens, focusing on the expression of movements and demeanor. Completing this set of works was both an interpretation of the character and an exploration of visual beauty under natural light through lens language, standing out as a wonderful piece of Cosplay photography and an outdoor portrait of a green-haired girl.
