[Kaenbyou Rin Cosplay] Touhou Project's Cat-Cart Driver, Open for Business Today - Image 1

Shot this set of Kaenbyou Rin cosplay on a bright sunny day. The red, black, and green color scheme paired with the cat ear styling fits perfectly with the unique Gensokyo mystery of Touhou Project.

This time I portrayed the hellish cart driver, Kaenbyou Rin. Since her setting includes cat demon features and the job of transporting corpses, the overall look went for a route that leans toward gothic, dark, yet carrying a bit of liveliness. To restore the highly recognizable pair of large black and red animal ears, I specially used flexible iron wires to secure them on top of my head, so no matter how my head turns, the ears stay upright and don't sag. The twin tails were also braided in advance using a red high-temperature fiber wig. To make it look fluffier and thicker, the ends were given some layered thinning treatment. Paired with blunt bangs, it truly captures the character's charm instantly. It took one or two hours of styling to fix the wig's shape; the positioning of layers and bangs requires precise placement, otherwise it easily makes the head-to-body ratio look disproportionate.

For the makeup, I first chose these wine-red contact lenses with a slight enlarging effect. The eyebrows and eyeliner were also adjusted to be softer to match the overall skin tone, avoiding an overly heavy makeup look. The black lace choker on the neck is the finishing touch of the entire outfit; the red rhinestone pendant in the center aligns beautifully with the nail polish and colored contacts. Disregarding the setting, just looking at this black top with lace bows and dark green stitching, it actually feels a bit sexy. But once the animal ears and red hair are added, the overall vibe transforms into that cool and sharp feeling of an animal-eared girl.

Although cosplay is about restoring 2D characters, I personally prefer to add some of my own understanding of the character. For example, regarding Kaenbyou Rin's demeanor, instead of intentionally trying to look fierce, facing the camera with a casual expression laced with a slight smirk fits that fearless vibe of the original work much better. The action of stretching the left hand forward is also to emphasize this liveliness, as if greeting or showing off something to the viewers in front of the screen.

During the shoot, I tried a posture where one hand reaches forward. This composition not only pulls the focus closer to showcase the red nail art on my hand, but also creates an interactive feeling of breaking the fourth wall, as if trying to grab the viewer in front of the screen. This first-person perspective, coupled with the red ambient light, allows people to feel the character's uninhibited personality. The overhead light casting down leaves shadows under the chin and nose, making the facial features more three-dimensional.

After completing this set for our cosplay photography project, I felt that this combination overall perfectly matches the image of the cat demon running through Gensokyo in my mind. As someone who loves anime culture, every time I do a character portrayal, I carefully ponder the character's core. Touhou Project there are many fascinating characters. Although Kaenbyou Rin's setting is managing corpses in hell, her carefree confidence and attitude of not taking her job too seriously make her feel highly vivid instead. Putting on this gothic style outfit and wearing red contacts makes it very easy to step into her state.

Usually when posting photos, people often ask me about wig management or makeup details. Taking the opportunity of posting this photoshoot, I've shared my restoration thoughts from hairstyle to accessories. Of course, the clothing texture in a real-world scenario will differ slightly from the game's official art—for instance, the dark green fabric will have reflections and black lace catches lint easily—but these physical material limitations actually make the character more grounded. I hope everyone enjoys this character presentation that carries a bit of a gothic vibe while still radiating vitality.
