[Reimu Hakurei Cosplay] Shrine Maiden: The Daily Life of Exorcising Youkai

When shooting this set of photos, the convention hall was packed with people and quite crowded. The towering ceiling and neatly arranged overhead lights of the venue, accompanied by the clicking of the shutter, gave me a strong sense of presence. Choosing the theme of "exorcism" was because I feel the core essence of Reimu lies in her exorcism vibe—both everyday yet surreal. For this outfit, Lolita-style lace and ruffled elements were added on top of the classic red-and-white shrine maiden dress, giving the overall look more sophistication and layering. Floral ornaments and ribbons on the headpiece accented the twintails nicely.

During the shoot, the photographer used a wide-angle lens and a high overhead perspective looking down. The perspective distortion from this special angle was intense, especially when I stretched my hand toward the camera, expanding the spatial distance between front and back. The wide-angle lens captured both my hand and face in the frame, creating a visual impact that felt like it was breaking through the screen, perfectly fitting the assertive and focused atmosphere of exorcism. For props, I prepared red talismans with white text and red-and-white paper streamers. Capturing the moment the shutter clicked while reaching out to grab the prop gave the image a dynamic sense of motion. Given the messy environment of the hall, finding the right angle was no easy task.

Regarding the details of this costume, the red-and-white color combination is Reimu's signature trait. The camellia flowers and gauzy decorations on the headpiece are parts I really love, as they break the rigidity of the traditional shrine maiden outfit. The layered white lace and ruffled design on the sleeves create a flowing texture when raising my arms. The collar design around the neck is also exquisite, acting as a great framing element. Paired with twintail buns, the hair ornaments with red ties visually echo the red skirt at the hem.

During the shoot, achieving a better visual result required more than just posing—it meant relying on my center of gravity to adjust to the camera angle. For example, tilting my head down to look at the lens aimed to convey a sense of calmness and intimidation through my eyes. Hand movements acted directly on the foreground, suspending the paper talismans and streamers in mid-air to freeze that moment of movement. This shooting method greatly tests stage design and layout, but under the complex background of the convention, cleverly using lens focal length can compress the field of view to highlight the subject.

I handled the post-processing myself. To give the images more depth and texture, I re-adjusted the colors. Removing distracting noise colors from the background preserved the purity of the red and white tones, while facial highlights and shadows were delicately refined, making the twintails and lace details stand out three-dimensionally under the light. I also appropriately optimized the edge sharpness to prevent edge distortion from the wide-angle lens from warping facial features. Retouching wasn't just applying filters; I focused on skin translucency so the face maintained a natural glow under overhead lighting. The red skirt hem and white lace required multiple color balance tweaks to be vibrant yet not glaring. Meanwhile, toning down messy background highlights and adding top-and-bottom black cinematic bars enhanced visual depth and a filmic feel.

Reimu in Touhou Project is a classic and charming character. Although a shrine maiden of the Hakurei Shrine, she is not bound by tradition, giving me plenty of creative freedom in styling. In this Cosplay daily life process, I feel it's not just about looking the part on the outside, but more importantly capturing her calm, unhurried, yet reliable aura. I hoped this photoset would convey a vivid sense of presence. Seeing the final retouched results made all the hard work in that crowded convention hall completely worthwhile.
