This Dorothy shoot was arranged at the riverside beach park with photographer Conghua. I had spent a long time brainstorming how to convey the character's sweet-yet-cool vibe in an outdoor environment, and finding the pool felt like a perfect match—the water's reflections effortlessly balanced the high saturation of pink and white, making the overall atmosphere emerge instantly.
To recreate the design faithfully, I brought along this very heavy, voluminous pink long wig today. Though it looks sleek and smooth in the photos, styling the bangs and side chignon before heading out took considerable time. Fastening the small white wing hairpiece onto the updo required extreme care, as any slight tilt midway through shooting would be glaringly noticeable. For the makeup, purple colored contact lenses were chosen to complement the pink hair, with eyeshadow blended in matching shades for a smooth transition. The outfit featured a white off-the-shoulder ruffle crop top paired with light blue denim shorts, with the choker and chest bow serving as key highlights of the coordinate. In addition, the transparent decorative wings at the back and the clear glitter swim ring in hand served as vital props to enrich the visual layers of the frame.
Sunlight at the riverside beach park was intense during the daytime, posing quite a challenge. White clothing tends to blow out easily under harsh light, so to preserve garment folds and textures, we deliberately sought tree shade and diffuse light bouncing off the pool's surface. Shooting began with static poses sitting on stone steps—crossing legs with insteps arched taut to elongate leg lines before the camera, requiring covert core tension while keeping the upper body relaxed. Later, we transitioned into the water; the moment of stepping in with the swim ring was truly refreshing.
Shooting in water is honestly much tougher than on dry land. The fabric grows heavier once soaked, and the wig easily gets wet and clings to the skin, meaning movements had to stay measured. To capture the character's lively agility in the water, I tried leaning forward to interact with the lens, or turning sideways while holding the swim ring. Freezing the splashes mid-air relied entirely on Conghua's rapid shutter timing; through light refraction, rippling water cast gorgeous dappled patterns across the face. Quick makeup touch-ups were required every time I emerged from the water to maintain base transparency, preventing any patchiness on camera.
The shoot at the riverside beach park proceeded smoothly, progressing step-by-step from dry styling to water-based interactions and exploring numerous compositions I hadn't attempted before. While managing the wig and maintaining balance in the water took considerable stamina, seeing the crisp colors and vivid water ripples in the final shots made everything feel completely worthwhile. I hope this photo set brings everyone a touch of summer refreshment.
