Heading to the coast in the peak of summer to shoot Dorothy in a Swimsuit was easily one of the most physically demanding photoshoots I've tackled recently. From conceptualization to on-site execution, immense thought went into every detail of the styling. To harmonize with the brilliant seaside daylight, I had stringent requirements for makeup longevity. Outdoor summer shoots face the constant risk of makeup breakdown—especially with damp sea breezes combined with direct, scorching sun. If the foundation base isn't featherlight and tightly adherent, color grading in post-production becomes a nightmare. I opted for waterproof, sweat-resistant products, locking in the eyeshadow and glitter flakes so that, framed by floral-accented pastel pink hair, the look delivered a refined, canonical 2D visual presence before the camera.

Managing the wig proved far more tedious than anticipated. Strong sea winds caused the long, spiraling curls to knot with ease. After every sequence of poses, my assistant stepped in to detangle the strands and reseat the bobby pins, making sure the bangs never veiled my eyes when looking down or turning sideways. The inner piece was a pastel pink halter Swimsuit paired with a sheer white long-sleeved cover-up cardigan, layered over a multi-tiered pink mini skirt. The beauty of this ensemble lies in its styling versatility—sliding the cardigan off the shoulders creates an effervescent, playful silhouette, while buttoning it up and fastening the front ties evokes soft, languid elegance. The over-the-knee White stockings were a detail I intentionally preserved: while barefoot wading is conventional at the beach, stockings elegantly sculpt the calf contours and visually elongate leg proportions, though navigating soft sand required constant care so the cuffs wouldn't slip.

A huge thank-you goes to photographer @八次方根. Framing by the sea hinges entirely on timing: harsh light flattens facial planes, while overly diffused light loses the crisp, sparkling clarity of summer. We staged the shoot during late afternoon, where golden side-back rim lighting cleanly outlined my silhouette while the azure sea formed a stunning backdrop to the soft pink attire. For poses, I experimented with glancing back over my shoulder—a pose that accentuates the curvature of the spine while letting the long pink tresses billow freely in the wind. The kneeling shot leaning against a transparent swim ring aimed to convey airy vacation tranquility and narrative depth. To keep the swim ring from blocking bodily lines, I shifted my center of gravity rearward, keeping the core engaged while stretching the legs outward to grant the frame three-dimensional depth.

Wearing thin footwear and walking barefoot over rough sand was slightly stinging, yet I maintained an effortless, relaxed demeanor for the lens. The biggest logistical challenge was the rapid incoming tide, which forced us to pull our gear further up the shoreline repeatedly. Naturally, when cosplaying by the shore, breezy hems flutter easily; wearing color-matched safety shorts underneath ensured the shoot remained both secure and focused. Although physically exhausting, witnessing the final frames where long pink hair weaves effortlessly into the deep blue ocean made every bit of effort profoundly worthwhile.
