[Youmu Konpaku cosplay] Touhou Project: Gardener of Hakugyokurou, the Half-Phantom Swordsman

Bringing this Youmu Konpaku look to life required the most effort on the three-dimensional flowers adorning the costume and the phantom companion prop. To faithfully recreate the red, blue, and white blossoms across the green skirt, I dedicated considerable time beforehand to sourcing suitable silk flowers, hand-sewing each bloom individually to ensure tactile, dimensional depth before the lens. For the Myon (half-phantom) prop, I intentionally chose a material that had substantial physical heft with a reflective sheen, lending it a smooth, rounded presence under ambient light rather than looking flimsy. The black obi bow at the waist, along with the scabbard adorned with skull and cherry blossom motifs, underwent repeated proportion adjustments against official reference art.

In terms of motion design, to accentuate Youmu's agility and cool resolve as a Kendo girl and swordswoman, I moved away from conventional static standing poses to execute a frozen leg-lift blade-draw stance. While deceptively simple in appearance, holding this posture demands rigorous balance control. Balancing on a single foot requires engaging the core while keeping the torso erect, alongside locking the grip tension on both hands so the scabbard won't tilt off-axis. To capture that sharp, razor-clean unsheathing momentum, we re-shot this dynamic leg-lift multiple times, finally freezing that fleeting second where the skirt flares beautifully while facial focus remains tack-sharp. The footwear paired an asymmetrical checkerboard pattern with traditional wooden geta; although visually distinctive, executing kicks and balancing on a single wooden clog was undeniably challenging, though I quickly found my rhythm on set.

The convention venue featured intense, clustered overhead lighting and a noisy, crowded floor. To carve out a crisp, cool ambiance, the photographer deployed a long focal length with a wide aperture to compress the background, melting the visual clutter of attendees and booths into soft blur while gently pulling down the overall exposure in post to make the color contrasts of the attire pop. For makeup, I deliberately understated the blush, pairing muted eye styling with the silver-white wig to closely reflect her composed, cool-headed aura. The overall results from this shoot were delightfully surprising: the vibrant color collisions of the outfit generated striking visual tension within the cool-toned environment, and the prop textures held up impeccably even under close inspection. This cosplay session was remarkably smooth, and I look forward to taking this look outdoors to a setting with rock gardens or bamboo groves to capture photos even more steeped in the original world's atmosphere.
