Cosplaying Chien Wu at the 2026 Port Midsummer Cool Festival this time offered countless details to share, from initial makeup tests to the on-site shoot.
For the wig, I selected a custom ear-length black bob. The bangs just brushed past the eyebrows, and the ends were subtly curled inward to flatter the facial contour. To give the wig a more organic texture, texturizing powder and holding spray were applied at the roots to keep it from flattening while walking through the venue.
On the cosmetics side, to match the character's temperament, I wore high-pigment crimson contact lenses. The eye makeup utilized expansive smoky blending with a slight upward wing on the eyeliner, paired with a matte deep-crimson lip. The base foundation emphasized clean translucency, which, under cool-toned illumination, enhanced that detached 2D anime edge.
The wardrobe served as the centerpiece of this look. The top features a blue halterneck Qipao cosplay silhouette with a mandarin collar, adorned across the bodice with vivid red peony embroidery. To build textural depth, the teardrop keyhole cutout at the chest was paired with a pearl necklace—the warm sheen of the pearls offering an ideal counterpoint to the blue fabric. Over this, I layered a sheer, pale-pink gossamer shawl; whenever my arms crossed, the drape and pleats of the delicate chiffon added dynamic flow to the frame.
In terms of pose design, Chien Wu embodies a sharp yet graceful presence. I kept my hands crossed gently over the chest, drew my shoulders back slightly, tilted my head, and locked my gaze directly onto the lens. This highlighted collarbone contours while clearly accentuating the garment's tailored lines.
Lighting at the venue was complex, so I scouted a zone backed by white geometric lightboxes. Harnessing the side-backlight from these panels sculpted the contours of my face and torso, lending the shots enhanced dimensionality while rendering skin tones luminous. The camera kit relied on a wide-aperture prime lens, whose creamy bokeh dissolved the chaotic exhibition hall clutter.
The entire shoot was quite demanding—especially maintaining wardrobe alignment and wig volume, which required frequent trips to the lounge for touch-ups. Still, sharing interpretations of the character with fellow fans made it deeply rewarding.
This shoot explored a fresh grading direction in post-production: subtly desaturating overall tones while elevating the contrast between blue and red to evoke cinematic depth. I will continue refining light and shadow techniques to deliver even better form in upcoming productions.
