This shoot brought to life Chen Hai Retrofit from Azur Lane. The overall costume design carries strong dimensional depth, anchored by a deep navy blue palette featuring delicate gold damask jacquard and gold piping along the edges. Draped in an outer layer of semi-sheer white chiffon, the bust is accented by an exquisite green lozenge-cut gemstone, with the garment cut tightly along the waist and legs. The lower half paired purple-gray form-fitting tights with white patent-leather high heels, which elongated the leg lines before the camera for a slender silhouette. The white feathers on the headdress paired with straight long black hair required extensive styling to lock into place, yielding an airy, flowing look.
Cradling the pipa prop during the shoot took considerable effort to look natural. Because the pipa carries tangible weight, the left hand had to steady the neck securely while the right wrist draped softly over the soundboard with mindful finger poise. Wearing black gloves made the finger contours look remarkably elegant in close-up portraits. Because this ensemble primarily projects a cool, detached, and stately grace, expressions avoided smiling, maintaining a steady, composed gaze directed straight into the lens.
We captured two distinct compositions. The first is a medium close-up designed to focus attention on facial nuance and practical props, while prominently showcasing leg contours and the texture of the Black stockings—a direct and compelling framing. The second is a full-body panoramic shot that widens the lens, incorporating the floral-and-bird folding screen behind, the curio display shelf to the left, and the round timber table on the right, steeping the scene in rich classical ambiance. Posing required careful arrangement of the skirt drapes to ensure they neither obscured the legs nor allowed the white gauze to billow haphazardly.
For lighting, the photographer used expansive soft illumination, letting the deep blue fabric catch soft sheens to avoid looking flat, while preserving crisp tactile highlights across the legs and textiles. Sustaining an upright, formal seated posture while supporting a heavy pipa was physically taxing, but the final selects turned out wonderfully. Every garment detail—from the drape of the sleeves to the collar layers and sweeping train—accentuated the character's refined aura. Bringing this design into faithful, tangible reality made for an immensely gratifying Chinese-style cosplay experience.
