On the day of the shoot, the makeup artist readjusted the horns multiple times before securing them perfectly with hairspray and wire. Blending the silicone pointed ears also took substantial time, requiring continuous stippling of foundation mixed with cosmetic adhesive along the edges to achieve a seamless, natural finish. We specifically chose a Chinese-style set featuring a moon gate, as that circular architectural frame best anchors the character's serene demeanor. Soft backlighting clarified the silhouette, while accents of trees and red plum blossoms kept the frame from feeling overly desolate.
For props, we prepared a calligraphy brush and bamboo scrolls, which added grounded, tangible substance when held. To project the character's quiet command, I experimented with various postures: sitting required an upright spine, keeping the brush-holding hand relaxed yet poised with intent; standing required mindful attention to the drape of the skirt to avoid sagging, paired with purposeful footwork. Throughout the shoot, I kept thinking about how to showcase the costume's nuances—such as the long braided ponytail and trailing orange tassel cords, which brought dynamic motion whenever I turned or walked. The lighting was executed masterfully: directional side light accentuated facial contours while preserving shadow details in the fabrics. The gaze was crucial—it needed to project quiet composure and focused depth without aggressive edge. Because the overall makeup leaned cool and understated, defining the brows and eyeliner took deliberate precision, with a subtle upward curve at the outer corners matching the character's temperament. The bamboo scrolls were chosen with an aged patina to look genuine on camera.
In post-processing, we preserved authentic textures without over-smoothing the skin, striving to faithfully reflect the true state of the styling and craft. Across the entire series, the standing shot best captured the full-body coordination and that blend of uninhibited yet reserved scholarly temperament, earning its place as the cover image. Though the shoot was physically taxing, the results matched my expectations.
