The Convention photos from this Firefly ACG Expo are finally out! For this Golden Lion Cosplay, I chose an ethereal Elf cosplay style outfit to capture the character's lightweight, divine presence. To be honest, preparing this costume took a lot of effort, especially the staff and flowing ribbons—balancing walkability at the convention without tripping over the train while keeping a floating, graceful aesthetic. The convention saw heavy foot traffic, but meeting fellow fans on-site who called out "Golden Lion" created an incredible sense of shared resonance.
When taking these photos, it was already night, and ambient lighting was quite complex. Fortunately, we brought portable fill lights. After discussing with my photography partner, we chose side-backlighting combined with soft frontal fill light, bringing out the translucent sheen of the white tulle dress and the refractive sparkle of the green crystal. The crystal atop the staff was crafted from acrylic film modifications, glowing with a gorgeous emerald green under the lights that echoed the green draping on the gown. To preserve the garment's clean silhouette, I chose clear high-heeled sandals with lace ankle straps, elongating leg proportions in both standing and seated poses to fit the slender elegance of an elf.
Since Golden Lion herself is an elegant and dignified character, I avoided exaggerated poses in the composition, relying instead on seated postures and graceful arm extensions to convey the mood. Among these, my favorites are the two shots leaning on the black ladder stool where the prop staff drapes down naturally and the green sheer drape spreads along the steps. Combined with the dark night sky and dotted street lights in the background, a striking contrast between warm and cool tones emerged. The hardest part of convention photography isn't how elaborate the costume is, but finding a relatively clean background in a crowded space while dodging passersby; the photographer's timing was immaculate, preserving authentic on-site lighting with minimal retouching.
Regarding props, the staff was quite heavy, especially with its openwork metal hoop and crystal structure at the top—holding it for long strained my wrist, so after finishing the set I immediately lowered it to rest my arm. The name tag on my chest was pinned specifically to find fellow fans; although slightly faded during post-processing, keeping it served as a meaningful souvenir of the expo. Wearing a white tulle dress always carries the risk of picking up dust, so during breaks I kept the train covered with dust bags. Still, to get the best shots, whatever needed to drape on the ground had to be draped, making cleanup afterward quite a chore.
Cosplaying Golden Lion gave me a deeper understanding of characters in Azur Lane; that noble yet slightly aloof aura can be greatly enhanced through subtle eye contact and micro-expressions. During the shoot, I continuously adjusted my shoulders and jawline to relax, avoiding stiffness from exertion. Holding the staff with one hand while adjusting the dress hem or holding the ladder with the other meant planning weight distribution in advance to avoid looking off-balance. Fortunately, the feedback on the final photos has been wonderful, and several photographers on-site snapped great behind-the-scenes moments. Despite the exhaustion, bringing a beloved character from the screen into reality is immensely rewarding.
When selecting the final photos, I specifically chose the relaxed sitting pose as the lead shot because of its superior sense of space, fluid lines along the staff and sash, and focused visual center. While I have other outdoor shoot plans tomorrow, these Convention photos from Firefly ACG Expo will stay with me for quite a while. Walking down the convention aisles in this outfit as the breeze caught the tulle, there was truly a moment where I felt I had stepped right through the dimensional wall.
