[Unicorn Cosplay] Azur Lane: The White-Clothed Girl in the Hydrangea Bushes

This outdoor shoot for Azur Lane's Unicorn focuses heavily on a student-style everyday feel in the scene conception. Unicorn's character design is actually very classic: a white sweater and sailor collar, paired with a black pleated skirt featuring pink edge lines, making it a highly standard school-style cosplay outfit. For the clothing material selection this time, I paid special attention to the drape of the fabric. If the texture of the knit sweater is too thick, it easily looks bloated, whereas if it's too light, it easily loses its shape. This black, white, and pink color-blocked sailor collar is the soul of the entire top. The pink piping on the edge of the collar is finely detailed, allowing the overall visual focus to concentrate on the face, neck, and shoulders. Combined with the twin tails fixed with black hair accessories and that signature ahoge, the restoration of the head styling is basically set.

In terms of makeup, to fit Unicorn's gentle and slightly cute aura, I ditched overly sharp eyeliner and adopted a large area of light purple and pink blending eyeshadow to shape the depth of the eye sockets. This, paired with violet-colored contacts, makes the gaze look softer and full of spiritual intelligence. The base makeup was kept very clean and light, doing only localized concealing and setting. In outdoor natural light, overly heavy base makeup easily creates a mask-like feel, which conversely ruins the youthful and lively atmosphere. The lip makeup selected was a water-gloss texture milk tea color, complementing the overall light color scheme beautifully.

For the props, I carried a white plush unicorn doll and the Japanese-style backpack by my side. In reality, plush props are highly sophisticated during a shoot; there is some nuance in how to hold them so it doesn't look forced. I adopted a cradling posture in front of my chest, which naturally rests my hands while using the plush toy's small yellow horn and eyes to increase the interaction within the frame. Placing the backpack beside my body serves as an excellent foreground composition element, breaking up the monotony of having just the skirt hem and legs, making the overall composition more full.

The venue was chosen in this large area of a blue hydrangea outdoor location. The blue-purple tone of the hydrangeas forms a same-system depth echo with the character's light purple wig, which, combined with the soft-focus effect brought by the blurred background, makes the character stand out prominently. The lighting during the shoot was crucial. This time, it was selected around 3:30 PM. The combination of backlighting and a reflector board gave the edges of the hair strands a layer of natural rim light, making the overall skin tone appear clearer and more transparent.

Regarding the shooting poses, crouching is actually a rather difficult angle to handle. If the center of gravity is unstable, it easily makes the shoulder and upper body lines look stiff. While taking this pose, I consciously leaned my body slightly forward to maintain a natural curvature of the spine, while slightly pressing down the leg closer to the lens to elongate the visual lines of the calf. The pairing of white tights and black leather shoes beautifully matches the refreshing feel of this JK academy style, and in some close-up compositions, the white socks also became an important element to brighten up the frame.

In fact, this shoot also encountered some minor challenges. For example, when the outdoor wind was strong, the wig blew around easily and needed frequent adjustments. Also, there were quite a few mosquitoes in the hydrangea bushes, so we needed to reapply mosquito repellent at any time during the shooting process. But these are all commonplace for outdoor shoots. The final feeling of the entire set is exceptionally fresh, without heavy traces of studio lighting, leaning more toward a natural atmosphere encountered in daily life. For restoring characters with an everyday and school setting, a natural sense of life is often more touching than extreme refinement. Under the premise that the costume and makeup are all in place, a relaxed and casual state is the core of expressing this beautiful girl with purple hair in this custom cosplay outfit.
