This time, we present a collective recreation of the Laterano faction from Arknights. In the lingering resonance of the "Guide Ahead" storyline, we chose this industrial space to bring these characters to life.
Executing this project was no spontaneous whim. From finalizing costumes and crafting custom props to coordinating schedules for all four characters, preparation took considerable time. In particular, the core wheelchair prop for Lemuen cosplay required specialized weathering to fit the lore; for Fiammetta's tail, we engineered an internal weighted armature so it wouldn't sag while standing. The firearm props for Mostima cosplay and Exusiai cosplay were equally critical—we needed to preserve their physical heft on camera while maintaining fluid, expansive postures. Lemuen's seated demeanor in the wheelchair posed a unique acting challenge: capturing her delicate vulnerability without looking overly despondent.
Lighting conditions were great on the day of the shoot, but industrial settings naturally bring intense light-and-dark contrast. The massive yellow steel stairs and grey concrete floors created a striking visual clash against their predominantly black-and-white outfits accented with bright color pops.
We often had to search repeatedly for optimal camera angles among the metal stairs. For example, for the composition with the wheelchair in front, we repositioned at least three times just to avoid an obtrusive background sign. Between takes, the four of us huddled around the camera monitor, fine-tuning slightly unaligned lines or a partially obscured tail tip.
The atmosphere of this set is quite nuanced; the raw grit of the location highlighted the characters' delicate silhouettes. Throughout the shoot, we strove to embody the core essence of "companionship" and "guardianship" rather than simply wearing the outfits mechanically. Costume details like metallic cuff buttons, leather harness straps, and stocking outfit elements become quite restrictive over extended wear, especially when hauling these massive props on location. Yet seeing light filter through the stair grating onto their hair and shoulders made all the sweat and exertion completely worthwhile.
I believe this is the most captivating aspect of Cosplay—finding a tangible space in three dimensions to faithfully express 2D characters. Rather than strictly replicating the original window-side illustration, we boldly ventured into this heavy industrial environment, reinterpreting the theme through this contrast of cold steel and tender warmth.
As the photographer and the cosplayer managing one of the characters, balancing both behind-the-scenes and on-camera roles in a single shoot is rare. It meant managing large wigs while directing positions for teammates; hectic as it was, seeing the final story-rich visuals healed all the fatigue. Furthermore, the fresh flower bouquets were brought by us, chosen in soft pastel tones to pop against the grey backdrop as a subtle finishing touch.
Cosplay of this scope puts team synergy to the test, requiring simultaneous upkeep of four sets of clean garments and four styled wigs. Amidst crossbars of scaffolding and cold metal, capturing content with such warmth is truly special. In post-retouching, we maintained natural lighting directions without sanitizing the gritty industrial atmosphere, as this raw texture made the characters feel even more lifelike. Looking back at these photos always reminds me of the fulfilling rush of running up and down that stairwell on shoot day. When expressing the theme of "unhealed old wounds," we carefully calibrated every shared glance and downcast gaze, letting static stillness tell the story behind the words and imbuing this work with resonance that transcends mere imitation.
