"Swish, swish, swish, and suddenly—Transformation Jutsu!" was the inspiration for this teaser. When conceiving this shoot, I wanted to accurately portray Kuda Izuna's fox ninja image—lively, playful, with a touch of mysterious aura. Because the character's traits are so distinct, we spent a lot of effort on styling to balance exaggerated 2D anime elements with real photography textures.
Let me start with the core costume and props. The design of this modified kimono is very clever, seamlessly fusing traditional pink cherry blossom patterns with a modern sailor collar—retaining the elegance of traditional Japanese attire while preserving the character's youthful energy. The patchwork patterns on the garment required careful selection of lighting and angles to prevent harsh reflections from washing out texture details, which is why we chose a Japanese style washitsu environment with soft, diffuse natural light. Beneath the outer top is a dark blue short skirt paired with black thigh-high socks and straps, visually elongating the lower body's proportions. The pose in picture two leaning by the sliding door, in particular, showcases the leg lines and strap details on the socks, creating a lively yet subtly playful vibe.
Preparing the props was also a major undertaking, with the giant, fluffy fox tail serving as the absolute visual focal point. Its weight and volume were much larger than expected, meaning I had to carefully manage my center of gravity and side angles during posing so that the fluffiness and fur texture appeared natural on camera rather than stiffly sticking out behind me. The fluffy beast ears on top of the head—perfect for a Kemonomimi girl look—along with cloud-pattern hair accessories and the uniquely shaped pink hollow halo, created rich layers. Adjusting these accessories took quite a bit of time each turn, especially ensuring the halo maintained the correct floating perspective behind my head from most camera angles.
Choosing to shoot in a Japanese courtyard washitsu was also based on the character's temperament. Opening the wooden grid sliding doors reveals outdoor cherry trees, lush green bamboo, and moss, creating a serene ambiance alongside the indoor tatami mats and wooden furniture. I intentionally adopted some casual, everyday poses, such as relaxing by a low tea table with a black iron teapot and sake set placed nearby, alongside a sword decorated with cherry blossoms and a white fox, constructing a warm afternoon break vibe. For the pose in picture five, reclining on the tatami and stretching out, I tried to express a relaxed, languid state through fluid body language, combining the flowing curve of slipping sleeves with the drape of the tail to form a compelling visual anchor.
I also differentiated the emotional expressions. Leaning against the doorframe in picture two with an index finger over my lips making a "shh" gesture aimed to express her playful, sharp side, with my eyes making direct eye contact with the lens for a sense of interaction. Meanwhile, the pose in picture six with hands joined together and eyes cast downward captured her quiet, tranquil moment. This contrast makes the story element of this photo set much richer. Regarding light and shadow, I specifically utilized afternoon natural light filtering through the shoji paper. This soft, diffused light contoured the outfit cleanly without casting harsh shadows on the face, giving the overall color tone a warm feel.
Although this is just a teaser, I hope these photos convey my dedication while preparing for this character. From adjusting costume fit and repositioning the tail after each movement, to fine-tuning facial expressions, every step was an effort to align closely with the original spirit while adding my own understanding of real-world photography. Recreating 2D anime elements in a 3D world involves much more than just wearing the same outfit; it requires considering how to present these elements within specific physical environments and camera angles. I hope this blend of traditional Japanese style and modern 2D anime elements brings everyone a fresh visual experience in this Anime-style photography set.
