The concept for this Mid-Autumn Jade Rabbit makeup and styling was in development for quite some time. When thinking of the Jade Rabbit, I wanted to avoid rigid stereotypes and instead lean into a nimble, playful, and approachable Ancient style cosplay aesthetic. The gown features sheer tangerine chiffon layered over a color-matched slip skirt, with delicate white floral embroidery across the lapels and outer robe framed by fine gold piping. To introduce richer dimensions, a deep orange sash was cinched into a bow at the waist, allowing the wide sleeves and flowing hemlines to billow effortlessly with every step.
For hair and cosmetics, aiming for youthful rabbit-like charm, I maintained blunt bangs and long face-framing tendrils. Atop the styled topknot, I anchored a pair of plush beast ears—black and white on the outside with soft pink interiors. Bright yellow floral clusters, white fur pom-poms, and cascading golden ribbons flanked each side to prevent monotony. Makeup centered on dusty pink blending around the orbital area paired with warm tangerine lips, harmonizing directly with the garment's palette.
Prop selection featured a handheld rabbit-shaped lantern whose warm internal bulb glowed translucently against the night, complemented by a semi-sheer illuminated butterfly fan. For this Night portrait, we staged beside a red stone stairway and carved balustrade, with golden fairy lights and a distant arched vermilion bridge softly blurred into creamy bokeh through a wide aperture lens. Front fill lights painted soft, even tones across my face.
Executing the poses required deliberate physical adjustments. Lifting the lantern demanded a raised wrist so the wide cuffs draped into a graceful hollow arch. Perched atop the vermilion railing, spreading the translucent chiffon evenly across my lap took multiple resets. Going barefoot against the chilly nocturnal flagstones was crisp, yet it perfectly honored the untamed spirit of the celestial rabbit. This Hanfu photoshoot beautifully blended classical heritage with whimsical ACG charm in a captivating Mid-Autumn traditional style portrait.
