A lot of thought and effort truly went into the costume and props for this Laffey cosplay look. When discussing with the photography team initially, we decided to create a dark magic style setting, combining a black leather sofa, chains, and red velvet drapes with abundant warm-toned spark effects and purple ambient lighting. To give the visuals richer depth, the costume maintained the luxury of the purple robe with gold trims, while utilizing a cut-out waist design and an airy tulle skirt to introduce a dynamic contrast.
Presenting the staff was a major challenge. To capture the red orb at the top of the staff emitting a dazzling magic glow in the dark environment, we embedded high-intensity LED light strips inside the prop and wrapped multiple layers of diffusion paper on the outside to prevent overexposure. During shooting, I had to control the staff with one hand while holding a wine glass filled with grape juice in the other, coordinating my gaze to express a slightly tipsy, languid mood. Wearing red contact lenses for a long time made my eyes dry easily, so whenever camera angles were adjusted, I quickly applied eye drops to keep my gaze clear and vibrant on camera.
Styling the wig also took considerable time; the long silver-white hair not only needed to be brushed silky smooth, but also had to convey a floating, dynamic presence before the lens. Many times, an assistant had to help flutter the hem of the sheer fabric at the back while I timed my poses to capture the best angles. In terms of posing, because the outfit exposes the waist, many reclining or semi-lying postures required holding tight core tension, which became physically demanding after a few sets. Adjusting the hand postures holding the wine glass and gripping the staff had to look natural rather than stiff, requiring multiple attempts before finding the most satisfying result.
I absolutely love the overall atmosphere of this shoot. The flying golden sparks and glowing purple lighting effects in the frames infused the entire work with a mysterious and luxurious gothic magic texture. From fitting the costume, refining prop details, to coordinating color tones with the post-processing artist, the production cycle was quite long. However, seeing how the light and shadow accent the texture of the purple robe and the smooth transition of lighting layers against the dark background, I feel this work's completion truly achieved the intended effect.
