Bringing Yachiyo's travel attire to this abandoned complex in Chongqing, I completed this photoshoot set. In fact, the moment I received this costume, I felt it was remarkably suited for a scene steeped in desolation and narrative depth. The red duffle coat boasts immense visual tension against this backdrop of green foliage and muted gray ruins. Paired with a white plush hat and pink braided pigtails, the overall palette is both vibrant and harmonious, perfectly fitting the travel essence under the post-apocalyptic hotel theme.
The lighting conditions on the shooting day were quite complex. To make the subject stand out, I used the Nikon Zfc paired with the Viltrox AF 56mm F1.2 Pro combination. The full-frame equivalent focal length of roughly 85mm is ideal for this kind of environmental portraiture; the wide F1.2 aperture cut through depth of field beautifully amidst cluttered reeds and brush, blurring out the background stone pillars and ruined buildings so that visual focus remained entirely on facial expressions and garment details. The retro styling of the camera body also complemented this winter-themed outfit unexpectedly well.
We discovered many intriguing shooting angles across the location. For example, a low-angle shot standing atop high stone pillars utilized the vast sky and distant building silhouettes to project an atmosphere both lonely and unconstrained. There was also the frame composition by the red-brick wall window: leveraging the strong contrast between indoor and outdoor light, harmonized with leg lines accentuated by leggings and boots along with the bright red coat, layered depth immediately emerged in the frame. To convey the character's traits, I purposefully designed actions like walking, sitting quietly, and flipping through a prop book across the ruined steps and alongside the reed beds. Layering leggings with white long socks and brown ankle boots not only made moving through the uneven ruin terrain easier, but visually elongated leg proportions, forming a wonderful balance with the heavy coat.
Chongqing inherently carries strong cyberpunk and magical realism colors; placing 2D travel attire into a real-world ruin environment was a truly fascinating attempt. The quality of this costume is solid—the woolen fabric holds a crisp structure and displays great texture under sunlight. In terms of wig styling, the texture of the twin braids required constant adjustment in this naturally windy setting; especially when shooting backlit shots, the rim lighting on hair strands made the overall silhouette much more three-dimensional. Because the venue had abundant vegetation, we had to be mindful of avoiding messy branches, using the large aperture lens's foreground blur to enrich the frame's layers.
The entire shoot was physically demanding, climbing up and down through ruins, but seeing the finished photos made everything feel completely worthwhile. Without deliberately engineering a grandiose narrative, it simply immersed the character into this weathered yet vibrant natural environment, capturing the character's quiet moments along the journey.
