Sanae Kochiya's styling proved to be a flawless match for the lush greenery of the Orchid Garden. I had long wanted to produce a Touhou Project cosplay photoshoot set against authentic classical garden architecture, so taking advantage of the fine weather in Guangzhou, we headed to Guangzhou Orchid Garden for on-location outdoor photography. Before setting out, I thoroughly inspected every aspect of the costume—the layering of the skirt hem, the fit of the headpiece, and the intricate details of the kagura bell prop. The blue printed fabric of the garment boasts high visual quality while remaining remarkably lightweight, allowing the expansive sleeves to flutter smoothly across the bridge without catching, producing gorgeous dynamic motion. Although the kagura bell prop is crafted from plastic, its metallic finish looks convincingly authentic, and its cascading red-and-green ribbons harmonized wonderfully with the natural environment.

Holding the prop was actually quite demanding; in the breeze, the trailing ribbons created significant drag, requiring a firm grip on the handle to maintain steady balance. However, when waved along the water's edge, the ribbons catching the wind created an intensely captivating visual. The garden's fountain happened to be active during the shoot; backlit water droplets sparkled brilliantly in the sun as the photographer captured dynamic action shots on the bridge with breathtaking depth, which is why I chose this series of photos. Because the fountain operated intermittently, timing was paramount—we had to trigger the shutter precisely when the spray reached its crest. Though it required multiple takes, the resulting captures were immensely gratifying. While waiting between fountain cycles, we also discovered a pristine water reflection vantage point, capturing crisp, steady frames after several rounds of trial.

The makeup and scene staging progressed smoothly, thanks largely to the Orchid Garden's lush botanical design. The stone lanterns, slate pathways, arched walkways, and upturned architectural eaves provided an ideal setting for a Touhou Project character steeped in Japanese Shinto lore, accentuating Sanae's ritual priestess persona. Natural sunlight filtered through the tree canopy to cast dappled shadows across the scene, rendering extra artificial lighting completely unnecessary. The garden's deep green tones accentuated the blue-and-white dress and white stockings, creating a soothing and balanced composition. Admittedly, walking back and forth across the grounds in this gear was physically tiring after a few hours, especially since the shoes were stiff and rubbed against my heels. But seeing the shimmering reflections and light play across the water in the final edits made all the fatigue worthwhile.

I was especially thrilled with the shots on the bridge where I waved the sleeves and the kagura bell—the blue-and-white patterns of the skirt unfurled in the wind with tremendous energy. The close-up under the tree shade, with leafy silhouettes dancing across my face, also exuded a distinct sense of tranquil mystery. That is perhaps the enduring charm of classical garden outdoor photography: every hidden nook offers unexpected artistic moments that allow your poses and expressions to integrate organically into the scenery. The session presented its share of technical challenges, demanding steady composure during complex poses while tracking sunlight shifts and foliage coverage. The botanical garden had plenty of mosquitoes, so huge thanks to my friends on set for constantly spraying repellent to keep the shoot on track. From concept planning to final retouching, the photographer poured immense dedication into this set. The seamless tapestry of water fountains, tree shadows, and heritage architecture made this portrayal of Sanae Kochiya truly memorable.
