[Marisa cosplay] Magician of Touhou Project: Big-Hatted Maiden in Winter Snow

This Snowy location shoot took place in a mountain area covered in deep snow, attempting a Marisa cosplay photo set from Touhou Project. Since I needed to restore a fanon style leaning toward ornate fairytale vibes, I put a lot of effort into costume coordination and scene selection.

The most eye-catching part of this costume is this oversized ruffled sunhat; the brim is supported by wide lace and stiff mesh netting to maintain this exaggerated yet exquisite shape. The skirt section features multi-layered tulle splicing and elaborate ruffles, creating rich visual layering. The off-the-shoulder upper body design makes the character silhouette look lighter and playful, while the black corset and brown vintage waist pouch add detailed texture to the outfit. I really love this hooked wooden long broom prop; its balance and center of gravity are controlled well, giving a solid sense of weight when held while capturing airborne jumping poses.

The weather conditions on the day of the shoot were quite extreme; although sunlight was clear, snow accumulation was thick and temperatures were below freezing. To capture that dynamic mid-air pose floating in the air in Photo 1, I jumped repeatedly on the wooden boardwalk. The ground in the snow was slippery, making jump force and mid-air posture control difficult, which heavily tested my core strength. The photographer used a slightly wide-angle lens with an extremely low angle, incorporating the character, giant hat, and the turquoise lake and white snow behind into the frame, delivering high color brightness and a cool-toned winter ambiance for this Anime-style photography.

After freezing outdoors in the cold for several hours, the hardship during shooting was quickly overshadowed by the joy of seeing the final photos. A difficulty during this photoset was that strong winds easily blew the giant hat askew, so we could often only capture a fleeting moment of stable posture. The wooden bridge, Japanese-style wooden cabin, and white signboards in the background naturally aligned with common ACG background settings, creating great interaction between character and environment. I feel characters in Touhou Project inherently carry a strong fairytale flavor, and placing this fanon costume version into a real winter snowscape added authentic 3D definition and magical fantasy atmosphere rather than feeling out of place. As for outfit styling, including White tights cosplay elements, heat packs were tucked inside to keep warm, while plush thick-soled boots provided decent grip on ice, echoing the overall attire style without disrupting harmony. Through this process, I accumulated plenty of experience with Snowy location shoots, such as preventing eyelashes from frosting and maintaining natural, vivid facial expressions in the cold.
