[Touhou Project cosplay] Convention Photos Share: Wandering the Venue with a Giant Scythe Prop in Afternoon Light

Picking up this substantial scythe prop, I shot a set of Touhou Project cosplay Convention photos in the outdoor area of this World Line anime convention.

Doing this look required balancing the wig styling with the skirt layers. Red hair twin tails paired with blue layered skirts, with red bows on the belt and white cuffs catching the eye brilliantly under the light. The wig's red color is very vibrant, displaying clear gradient layers under Outdoor photography light, while the side curls were styled and set to give the head shape a full appearance.

The Scythe prop is the soul of the entire look. To present its massive presence in photos, beyond restoring the black-and-white curved blade during crafting, finding the proper center of gravity was essential to holding it steadily. Wandering around the convention floor, because the prop was so long, I had to constantly watch surrounding pedestrians and booths to avoid bumping into passersby. Although lifting the scythe required some arm technique, during formal shooting, this weapon framed the composition's boundaries remarkably well visually.

This photoset was shot by photographer @Canwen. I really appreciate the angles he selected, such as sitting and crouching perspectives that effectively avoided cluttered crowd backgrounds, utilizing large aperture to focus visual attention squarely on the character and props. Natural lighting on the shoot day was very soft, experimenting with both front lighting and backlighting, while post-processing color grading preserved a very translucent texture. Especially the sitting shots on the ground clearly displayed white sock and red strap details, while the tilted angle of the scythe formed a perfect diagonal composition, keeping the frame balanced without looking rigid.

Convention photos truly test makeup and styling durability. Staying outdoors for over an hour, the hairstyle suffered no noticeable deformation, and makeup didn't smudge from sweat. The petticoat strength supported the fabric's drape, maintaining the silhouette of the lower body. Posing with such a large scythe was indeed much more strenuous than holding ordinary props, but the final photo quality turned out great, transforming all the hard work into vivid energy in the pictures.

The atmosphere at the World Line anime convention remained lively as ever, with outdoor sunlight filtering through tree shadows to cast lovely dappled light across red hair and blue skirts. I bumped into quite a few fellow Touhou fans; greeting everyone felt wonderfully warm, and occasionally people walked over asking for photos. In an environment so filled with creative passion, leaving behind a moment's record of an ACG persona is deeply meaningful.

For Convention photos, I believe the most important aspect is maintaining posture while relaxing limbs—even when holding a giant scythe, avoiding rigidity before the camera is key. The photographer was skilled at guiding emotions, making every snapshot appear natural. This photoset balanced the color layering of red, blue, and white thoroughly, allowing viewers to instantly feel the character's unique vitality and ambiance. Overall, it was a delightful shooting experience, and I'm very satisfied with the final output.
