I saved all my spring energy for this night cherry blossom session this year, and I had always been looking forward to using flashes to capture the night red-and-white color palette belonging to Reimu Hakurei. Luck was on our side on the day of location scouting; the flower branches were hanging very low, which, combined with a large aperture and light painting concept, made this classic Touhou Project character truly look casual yet agile under the lens, just like in a Touhou fanon space. In Image 3 and Image 4, I selected 4 photos. Honestly, there were many discarded raw photos of running and waving sleeves because the ribbons were so long they easily got tangled in my hands, but in the end, it froze some unexpectedly casual postures. This outfit has many layers built into the waist ties and cuff ruffles. Rather than restoring the simplicity of the original design, I preferred to add some gorgeousness to make it blend more naturally with the cherry blossom backdrop.
Controlling the lighting at night is actually much harder than during the day. It requires suppressing the pitch-black night sky in the background to prevent the flowers from overexposing, while ensuring that the white base of the skirt and the red accents do not overflow from the frame. The preparation for the costume, makeup, and props took about 3 hours beforehand, especially that huge red bow on the headpiece; I had to adjust its position repeatedly so it wouldn't block the extending lines of the twin tails. During the shoot, the photographer kept teaching me how to hold that rod with the ribbon streamer; it really can't be held rigidly, but rather has to sway dynamically with the rhythm of the wind or breathing. Every time I cosplay this character, that aura of \"lacking majesty but overflowing with casualness\" is actually quite hard to grasp. Reimu Hakurei's vibe of not caring much yet constantly fighting might be better conveyed as a relaxed, jumping rhythm in photos to fit the night cherry blossom photography atmosphere.
In fact, night portraits heavily test the texture of costume and makeup details. Lace trims that aren't very noticeable during the day can look very harsh under a strong flash, so this time I specially added several layers of different gauzes to the cuffs and skirt hem to make the reflected light softer. The final photos have truly dialed up this gorgeous night cherry blossom atmosphere to the max. A fanon Reimu wandering around at night dressed like this is inherently a very narrative-driven thing. When editing, I intentionally pulled the color temperature slightly toward the cooler side to neutralize the restlessness of the red, preserving that pure, snow-white sea of flowers in the dark night.
