This set of Rem cosplay Convention photos was taken at an anime convention, captured through the lens of photographer Xia Shiyi. I have always wanted to portray Rem with high fidelity, so both the costume and wig were custom-made in advance. The light blue short hair with straight bangs, the white plush cat ears on top, and the reddish-pink hair ornament on the side, paired with light-colored contacts, made my complexion appear very clean in front of the camera. The outfit is a classic black-and-white maid dress featuring ruffles at the neckline and cuffs, a lace-up corset at the waist, well-defined skirt layers, and a proper inner lining. Paired with White stockings and black platform Mary Janes, the leg lines were visually elongated considerably for this Cute girl cosplay.
The shooting location was chosen in a corner with relatively even lighting. The photographer positioned the camera very low, tilting slightly upward. In the first photo, standing beside a black barstool with my body slightly turned and hands making lively gestures, this angle wonderfully displayed the flared form of the skirt hem and the contours of the legs; combined with the overhead ceiling lights blurred into circular bokeh by the wide aperture, the shot carried great visual texture. In the second photo, sitting sideways on the barstool and looking back toward the lens, the curve of this posture looked more flattering, and the hand gestures felt calmer and more composed.
To preserve the atmosphere of Convention photos, post-processing avoided exaggerated color grading, maintaining the cool gray tones of the background so that the character's black, white, and blue palette stood out prominently. The convention hall environment was rather cluttered, so capturing relatively clean backgrounds was a true test of composition. Throughout the shoot, the photographer gave continuous guidance on poses, such as how to stand to maximize leg length and how to arrange the skirt naturally. Because White stockings get dirty easily, moving around to shoot at the convention required extra caution.
The surface of the maid dress fabric has a subtle sheen that displayed even richer texture under the lights, and the white lacing details on the corset were crafted with crisp dimension. The multiple layers of petticoats inside kept the skirt hem from collapsing when sitting down or turning, maintaining a lovely shape. The close-fitting material of the White stockings fully showcased the leg lines in the side-sitting pose, harmonizing with the strapped shoes to complement the outfit's overall aesthetic.
Both photos reflect thoughtful composition and movement—one leaning lively and the other gentle. Although shot at an ordinary convention center venue, depth-of-field control and low-angle framing established a wonderful atmosphere. The on-site lighting was actually complex with densely packed overhead fixtures, but the photographer turned them into beautiful light orbs using a wide aperture. The barstool was an on-site prop, and using it to adjust posing angles was a great idea. Moving around to find angles during the shoot was very engaging. This photo set completely documents my process of bringing this character to life, serving as a memorable preview before the full cosplay release. Special thanks to photographer Xia Shiyi for the hard work, and I am thrilled to portray Rem in a state I'm so pleased with. The waiting and coordination during shooting were all to achieve better visual results, and I hope these photos capturing the on-site convention atmosphere convey the character's unique charm.
