For this Sailor suit cosplay shoot featuring Rem cosplay, the primary focus was placed on wig styling and the nuanced details of the eye makeup. For the character's signature light blue short hair, I deliberately preserved thicker straight bangs when trimming, letting them naturally drape over the left eye to capture her distinct mystery and gentle demeanor. The wig was crafted from matte heat-resistant fiber that prevents harsh specular reflections under studio lights, ensuring visual realism. In terms of makeup, to embody the character faithfully, I wore icy Blue colored contact lenses, using cool earth tones for eyeshadow to contour depth and subtly elongating the outer corners, which paired with distinct separated lashes to make the eyes look clear and pure. The base makeup pursued a dewy, translucent finish, matched with faint pink blush and glossy lip glaze to add soft, youthful tenderness.
For wardrobe, I chose a classic black sailor suit featuring iconic triple white stripes along the sailor collar, finished with a vibrant red tie bow. The contrast between black and red is timeless, delivering strong visual impact. To maintain the crisp structure of the uniform, it was carefully steamed and ironed prior to shooting, looking sharply fitted once worn. We chose an indoor studio because blue hair is very sensitive to lighting; warmer illumination would cast yellowish tints on the hair, so cool-toned soft lights were specifically utilized. This light source not only rendered the hair in a translucent ice-blue tone, but also made the complexion look porcelain fair.
Regarding expressions and poses, I experimented with micro-expressions evoking a playful Cat-like girl vibe—tucking the chin slightly, upturning the corners of the lips, and keeping the eyes casually languid. To make the pictures even more engaging, I added cute doodle effects in post-production like cat ears, whiskers, and a white dot on the tip of the nose; while I originally intended a calm and aloof style, the doodles made it quirky and adorable. Actually, doing everyday cosplay isn't just about grandiose, high-fidelity photoshoots—these casual, lived-in waist-up portraits bring just as much joy.
While interpreting the character, I kept pondering how to express that demeanor which appears cool on the surface but harbors deep tenderness within. Overly exaggerated expressions wouldn't suit this styling, so emotions were channeled through the focus of the gaze and subtle curves of the lips. From makeup tests to the final shoot, even for a simple Sailor suit cosplay styling, every hair strand's direction and every gradient of eyeshadow were crafted to closely honor the original design from Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World. The whole shoot went seamlessly with great creative synergy with the photographer, quickly capturing that tranquil yet subtly lively ambiance.
