Today in a Shanghai white studio, I completed a shoot of the Gymnastics uniform version of Rem from Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World. The core elements of this shoot were distinct: aqua-blue short hair, a white short-sleeve Gymnastics uniform trimmed with navy blue, navy athletic shorts, and pure White stockings extending over the knee. To match the pristine visual atmosphere, I specifically chose a giant light-blue Yoga ball as a prop, shooting against a seamless white studio cyclorama.
The wig received basic styling: the bangs were trimmed to graze just past the eyebrows, accented by white cross-shaped bobby pins on both sides. In terms of cosmetics, the emphasis was placed on a crystalline base and blue contact lenses; the eye makeup did not need to be overly heavy, maintaining a natural and understated balance, paired with a soft nudish-coral lip tone to pursue an aesthetic that feels close to 2D character art yet grounded in realistic skin texture. The Gymnastics uniform and shorts were form-fitting, neatly tracing natural body lines, while the over-the-knee White stockings visually elongated leg proportions, serving as a primary visual highlight for this series.
The greatest challenge during the shoot was orchestrating natural and aesthetic interactions with the Yoga ball. Its surface was exceptionally slick and prone to specular reflections, yielding to pressure with noticeable deformation. The first few poses involved sitting atop the ball, requiring core stability to balance while being mindful of leg lines; to capture a cleanly pointed instep, my calf muscles remained contracted throughout. Later, we explored kneeling on the floor with both hands resting on the sphere, leaning sideways against its curve, and eventually lying prone across the ball with one leg extended upward behind me. Photographer @OolongChacha devoted immense effort to lighting: the diffused illumination of the white studio fell softly across my body, but to sculpt definition along the White stockings and the pale blue sphere, rim lights were added from the side, while subtle shadows on the grey floor deepened spatial dimension.
Shooting White stockings against a white studio setup severely tests lighting finesse; overly flat illumination easily strips away dimensional depth. Throughout the session, I continuously recalibrated my angles, glancing back over my shoulder with my back to the camera or using arm lines to direct visual focus. The aqua-blue hair was eye-catching against the pure white background, with the navy trims on the uniform grounding the composition. This ensemble offered a classic anime-inspired athletic coordinate, channeling Rem's gentle yet quietly steadfast demeanor through physical presence. The set remained lighthearted, using downtime between poses to finesse sock wrinkling or study how the spherical curvature of the Yoga ball accentuated bodily silhouettes. While the final frames look effortless, maintaining a pristine posture often meant freezing motion for several seconds, leaving legs and back stiff after multiple cycles. Every white studio shoot is a dual trial of stamina and patience, but seeing the crystalline color palettes and rewarding compositions on the monitor swept all fatigue away.
