[Rei Ayanami cosplay] The Shattered Tranquility in Neon Genesis Evangelion

The shooting location for this set of photos was chosen beside the Pudian Road Metro Station, coinciding perfectly with the peak blooming season when the white Hydrangea flowers were densely in bloom. Since only this single photo was used as a teaser, I selected this upward-tilted profile composition. After finishing the shoot, I rushed to the subway station just in time for the last train—it was indeed quite a rush, but the overall shooting process went very smoothly, and I really love how the final photo turned out.

During pre-shoot preparations, most of my energy went into wig trimming and makeup adjustments. This blue short wig looked quite luminous under natural light, yet took on a grayish tone in the tree shade. To give my gaze an ethereal look, I chose reddish-brown contact lenses, which created a striking visual contrast against the blue hair. Given the character's unique design, expression management was a real challenge—that subtle, calm state with minimal emotional fluctuation is actually the hardest to capture. After a few test shots, I found that slightly tilting my head up and gazing toward the blurred upper-diagonal rather than directly focusing on the camera best captured that delicate, vulnerable aura.

There were several reasons for choosing Hydrangea flowers as the backdrop. First, the clean white flower background required no extensive post-production cutouts; second, the soft shape of the flower clusters created a wonderful contrast with the character's chilly nature. A large-aperture lens was used during the shoot, placing blurred petals in the foreground and rendering the background into soft color blocks, positioning the subject on the right side of the frame with ample negative space in the line of sight so visual focus naturally fell on the character. In terms of lighting, a touch of backlighting was introduced, creating a faint halo around the edges of the hair on top while making the skin appear more translucent. In post-processing, contrast was lowered and the overall color shifted toward cyan-blue while preserving shadow details, avoiding overly complex effects to rely on the natural on-site Atmosphere.

When I posted this set on WeChat Moments, it didn't get many likes; my non-otaku friends didn't seem too keen on this ACG aesthetic and style, finding it difficult to understand. However, that didn't dampen my passion at all—rather than catering to my social feed's preferences, I'd much rather connect within my own hobby circle. Because I love Neon Genesis Evangelion and the character Rei Ayanami, devoting energy to researching styling and makeup, finding suitable locations, and communicating angles and lighting with the photographer are all processes I thoroughly enjoy. To find the right angle for this shoot, I squatted in the grass for a long time, getting several mosquito bites on my legs and mud on my skirt hem, but fortunately the final image was very clean. This is a common occurrence with outdoor shoots, but when you capture an atmospheric photo that satisfies you, these minor inconveniences are nothing. I hope this photo set encounters fellow fans on social media who appreciate this texture; despite being tiring, it was truly rewarding.
