When putting on this white plugsuit, a wonderful sense of serenity filled my heart. For this shoot, I didn't choose an outdoor location, but instead built this cultivation capsule scene in a studio specializing in sci-fi themes in Qingdao. Surrounded by holographic screens, a massive circular cold light source overhead, and a glowing hexagonal base beneath my feet, it created an incredibly intense sense of enclosure inside the dim studio. Judging from the finalized photos, the cool cyan lighting pulled the atmosphere perfectly into place.
The texture of this costume in my hands is actually quite excellent. The elasticity of the tight bodysuit perfectly fits my body shape, and the black-and-white line splicing standardly restores the character's cold aura and minimalist sci-fi feel. Especially the armor parts on the handsāthough a bit stuffy, wearing them makes my entire demeanor feel heavily mechanized. During the shoot, I needed to enter a very empty, blank state, avoiding smiling too much to maintain the character's serene calm that is alienated from the crowd. When directing the poses, we tried several different angles. For instance, the close-up of my hands lightly pressed against the glass wallāthe glass surface was actually slightly chilly, and that sensation of isolation from the outside world instead made me immerse myself further into the character. There was also the moment of looking up at the ceiling light and reaching out one hand toward the light, which felt like waiting for a certain command or some awakening of self-awareness.
The photographer's control over light and shadow was highly professional. They didn't use too much complex ambient light, keeping only the cool color overhead as the main light source and utilizing the glimmer from the surrounding displays as fill light, preserving many high-contrast shadow areas. During post-processing, I also requested to preserve the texture of the photos as much as possible, refraining from excessive softening and skin-smoothing to keep the facial contours and clothing wrinkles intact. This icy and slightly rigid style perfectly matches the impression that Neon Genesis Evangelion left on me. Actually, when watching the original work, I always felt that scenes like Rei Ayanami inside a sealed capsule are the ones that best reflect her identity and psychological conflict. Although her body is enveloped by technological equipment and she herself is an "artificial creation," the moment she reaches out her hand, it feels as though she can still touch a tiny bit of warmth.
The process of this shoot was even smoother than I had anticipated. Because the set design was highly three-dimensional, with cables hanging down all around and UI screens flickering with data, it directly transformed the shooting location into a time capsule. I feel that this style of studio shoot can express the character's core much better than grand, massive scenes. After busying myself for the entire day, although my legs were a bit sore from standing for so long, seeing the frozen moments in the viewfinder made me feel that all the preparations were completely worth it. This kind of photography that purely restores the character without mixing in too many flashy elements is a creative method I have always deeply enjoyed.
