For this Neon Genesis Evangelion Asuka Cosplay photoshoot, I tried to focus on capturing her confident yet slightly sharp and prickly expression. Asuka is a character with a very distinct personal style—seemingly fierce but inwardly vulnerable—so I put a lot of effort into portraying her gaze. To make the eyes look closer to the anime aesthetic of the original design, I used large-diameter blue contacts and adjusted my eyelid tape technique to give the eyes a more upward slant. I chose a darker reddish-brown wig, which reveals a rich, layered hue under warm lighting. For the costume, I selected her most recognizable bright yellow camisole paired with red ribbons, which is essentially her signature look.
I also did quite a bit of research on the overall proportions of this styling. For instance, the high twin tails needed to be just long enough to drape past the shoulders so they wouldn't look clunky during movement. Since this outfit represents a powerful mecha pilot, I tried to emphasize a poised, tense readiness in my posture. As for makeup details, I deliberately used a matte foundation paired with subtle cheek highlights to simulate the cel-shaded lighting and 2D three-dimensionality.
Because I opted for a mirror selfie this time, I spent considerable effort on composition. To enhance the visual impact, I deliberately reached my hand forward, leveraging the perspective distortion of the phone's wide-angle lens to magnify the arm and create an aggressive sensation—as if the character is reaching out to grab the camera. This angle was quite tricky to dial in, as I had to balance the face in the mirror, the posture, and avoid blocking the view with the phone. Constantly adjusting the tripod and focus made my shoulders and arms ache, but seeing the final shot made it totally worthwhile.
The shoot actually took quite a long time. To find the perfect gaze angle, I adjusted the tripod height countless times and tested reaching out from various distances. The final frame selected captured the exact split second where the fingers were spread wide and the gaze was at its sharpest. In post-color grading, I preserved some cool blue tones to give the image a subtle, hazy mist, creating a strong contrast with the yellow outfit that fits the slightly melancholic sci-fi mood of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Meanwhile, I subtly refined the hand lines with light liquify adjustments to soften any unnatural wide-angle distortion.
Looking back, shooting this set was not merely about recreating a costume, but an exercise in interpreting the character's inner psyche. Asuka's competitive nature precisely reflects her deep-seated loneliness. That's why I didn't force a smile, but instead kept a detached demeanor, hoping to capture a spark of the character's soul in my expressions. Because mirror reflection photography can easily break immersion, emotional focus was crucial throughout. All in all, this shoot not only delivered a great recreation, but also provided valuable experience in mirror selfie composition and character portrayal.
