Every time I shoot Asuka, I try out different slice-of-life settings, and this time I chose a very warmly decorated kitchen. The homeware look featuring a white camisole and dark blue shorts, combined with twintails and her iconic red hair bows, places the overall visual focus on a lazy, casual state of living, thereby showcasing a sense of relaxation completely different from her plugsuit.
Before the shoot, I specifically readjusted the position of the wig and the eyepatch to ensure that under various camera angles like high-angle shots and front close-ups, they wouldn't obscure facial expressions while still maintaining the character's recognizability. The makeup was also tweaked to match the ambient light; I intentionally reduced the intensity of the highlighter to make the overall skin tone look more natural and blend into the warm tones of the kitchen lighting.
The photographer is highly skilled at using objects in the scene to enrich the composition's layers, such as the wooden storage cabinets at the top, neatly arranged kitchenware, a toast pendant on the wall, and that glass jar filled with beans. These combined details create a very realistic slice-of-life vibe, making it feel as though the character is just sitting in her own kitchen.
I have always felt that the most interesting part of Anime-style photography lies in recreating the multi-faceted nature of a character through a specific space. Placing the strong and assertive EVA Asuka into a casual, daily environment actually presents a fun, contrasting cute trait (gap moe). In terms of lighting, soft diffuse reflection was applied to simulate the natural light of early morning, avoiding shadows brought by harsh lighting and giving the entire character a softer look.
The photo output process went very smoothly this time, and the drape and folds of the outfit were kept as natural as possible. Both the trimming of the wig and the matching of the costume underwent meticulous preparation. There are still some variant stylings attempted in the same setting later on that also maintain this daily vibe, and I hope to show everyone a different side of the character.
As for the wig-styling tips that many fellow fans often ask about, I actually took detailed notes this time. The height of the twintails and the securing method of the red hair clips both need to be symmetrical; if they stick up even slightly during the shoot, they have to be tidied up immediately, otherwise it easily looks messy. The straps of the eyepatch were also given an anti-slip treatment to prevent displacement during large movements or when bowing the head.
In short, it was a highly healing shooting experience, and every time I look at the final images, I can recall that warm atmosphere in the kitchen back then. Given the opportunity in the future, I will try more daily-life themes from this series to slowly unearth other sides of the character through this Kitchen cosplay.
