This time, I chose Kuriyama Mirai from the classic anime Beyond the Boundary, bringing a brand new set of industrial night scene photos. Under a giant red industrial crane at night, interwoven with red and blue neon lights, this cold, mechanical environment genuinely suits this red-framed glasses girl—always carrying a hint of loneliness yet remaining extraordinarily resilient.
Let's start with the styling preparations. A light golden short wig with her iconic Ahoge on top is essential, and putting on the oversized red-framed glasses instantly maximizes the character's core traits. Costume-wise, it features a classic white sailor collar top layered under a loose light beige cardigan, completed with black tights and black loafers on the bottom. This seemingly daily yet school-inspired Anime-style fashion outfit heavily tests overall proportions and texture. To prepare for this Kuriyama Mirai cosplay, I specially readjusted her signature red blade prop, repeatedly polishing and modifying its surface material to achieve better luster under lighting. Seeing it elevate the visual tension in front of the lens made every effort worth it.
This shoot took place in a vast port industrial area; although it was quite windy at night, it created a great atmosphere. The photographer was extremely thoughtful with the lighting setup, intentionally placing a cool blue light source in the foreground while relying on the striking red steel frame light strips already in the park for the background. This high-saturation, strong cold-and-warm contrast between red and blue cast a cyberpunk-like dream filter over the steel jungle, elevating this Night portrait experience.
In terms of pose design, we experimented with several different angles. In the first shot, sitting on a high square container with my head slightly tilted down, the skirt drapes naturally while the red long blade extends toward the camera, creating a subtle, playful yet vigilant atmosphere in stillness. The second and third shots added more dynamic expression. That final battle crouch pose heavily tested lower body strength, requiring me to keep my center of gravity very low while steadying the prop in hand so the red blade tip pointed forward. The wind blew through my hair and skirt just right, capturing a vivid sense of vitality.
Choosing this classic anime for cosplay stemmed from nostalgia. When watching Beyond the Boundary back then, the dialogue and emotions deeply moved me. Kuriyama Mirai seems delicate, often hiding her anxiety and outsider identity behind her glasses, yet deep within resides a resolute strength—a longing to fight and break free from destiny. Reinterpreting such a character in this late-night steel forest felt like resonating with her across time and space.
Cosplay photography for a Night portrait is notoriously difficult: one must darken the night sky to prevent the glaring red light strips from overexposing, while keeping facial light and shadow clean and three-dimensional. The photographer controlled light sources precisely, ensuring the sheen on the white sailor collar wasn't blown out and preserving the texture of black tights. I particularly loved the rim lighting outlining hair strands under backlighting, popping the character out completely from the dark background.
Post-processing kept the cool, crisp night atmosphere without over-brightening, focusing instead on boosting color contrast and hair texture. For me, this set is both a homage to a classic anime and a test of my control over photography, makeup, costume, and props. Experimenting across different angles and lighting setups culminated in this satisfying result.
