I chose the character Tsubaki Rurikawa for this shoot because her proud yet slightly detached quality really attracts me. The classic black-and-white maid outfit, paired with a lightweight white ruffled headpiece, reveals the character's unique exquisiteness within simplicity. To restore Tsubaki's aloof and somewhat stubborn demeanor, I specially adjusted the focus of my gaze during the shoot, not deliberately playing to the camera but maintaining a downward perspective.
The white gloves and shiny leather shoes are one of the visual highlights of this look, forming a sharp contrast of layers with the black dress. Regarding the light and shadow processing, after communicating with the photographer, we settled on a soft top-side light, which beautifully outlines the texture of the clothing fabric while making the facial contours more three-dimensional. I tried a side-turned backward glance pose, utilizing the body's twist to break the stillness of the skirt lines and add some dynamic tension.
Since it's a studio portrait session, the background treatment pursues minimalism, using only a soft gray color to eliminate redundant distractions, concentrating the visual focus completely on the character herself. The costume details were adjusted many times—such as the positioning of the apron straps and the folded height of the cuffs—to stay as true to the setting as possible. Every cosplay work requires a deep enough understanding of the character. During makeup, I also emphasized deepening the eye contours, paired with the styling of the wispy bangs, attempting to bring out the complex emotions of a "Botsuraku Kizoku Rurikawa Tsubaki." Although the whole process was hard work, being able to express my understanding of the character's style through the lens made it a highly fulfilling roleplay experience.
