In preparing this JK uniform derivative outfit for Firefly, I felt the need to highly restore the character's spirit while integrating more everyday everydayness from real life. The hairstyle retained the character's iconic gradient from white to cyan, paired with light purple colored contacts to make the eye expression closer to the character's agility. For the clothing, I chose a uniform with mint green and sailor collar elements. The plaid pattern and golden embroidery details of the bow tie are the visual focus of the entire outfit, finally paired with a vintage handbag and a transparent umbrella to construct a school outdoor setting during the falling cherry blossom season.
The shoot day happened to coincide with the cherry blossoms in full bloom, but the light was slightly insufficient. This soft light before overcast rain was actually very suitable for shooting Japanese-style outdoor scenes. During the shoot, I used a large aperture mid-telephoto lens to compress space, allowing those cascading flower branches in the background to form a natural blur, so that the character could be properly kept in the center of the frame. To add interest, I specially brought my matching chibi figure to appear in the shoot together. Here, the figure is not just a prop, but a bridge connecting the 2D world with the body.
The standing posture holding the transparent umbrella needs to create an inadvertent sense of relaxation. When standing, I would intentionally let one toe slightly touch the ground, which can modify the lines of the legs and make the overall standing posture look lighter. At the same time, pay attention to the angles of the school bag handle and the elbow, which must not block the badge and bow tie on the clothes. The shooting process lasted about two hours, and a few cherry blossoms would fall on my shoulders when the wind blew, adding a vivid sense of atmosphere to the photos.
Regarding the photo-editing concept, I lean toward retaining that elegant, grayish pink-white tone of the original picture. In post-production, I mainly made micro-adjustments to the skin tone to make it look more translucent, while slightly strengthening the layers of the cyan hair. The blue sky in the background underwent appropriate low-saturation treatment, so that the visual focus could be concentrated on the character. This time I took two scenes, one holding the school bag and turning sideways to look at the camera, and one standing quietly holding an umbrella, paired with a chibi figure, forming a great macro-micro narrative within the entire frame.
When coordinating this outfit, I think the positioning of the hair and hair accessories is very critical. The hair accessory with butterfly wing elements needs to be clipped right next to the left ear to echo the gradient hair ends. The makeup leaned toward a soft pink-orange color palette without using overly rich contouring, hoping to use a clean and light look to match the youthful energy of this JK uniform style. For outdoor shoots, I often choose to use a larger aperture to blur the background; a pink-and-white interwoven sea of flowers like this would appear cluttered if completely sharp.
The finalized photos selected in the end, whether in terms of composition or color atmosphere, beautifully present the concept of "Firefly's spring stroll" that I wanted to express. Shooting this look under the cherry blossom trees is not only an extension of the character setting from Honkai: Star Rail, but also allows us to find a beautiful point of balance between the real world and the game world for this piece of Anime-style photography.
