"Crush! Annihilate! Melt to ashes!" Aleph One, are you ready? Ever since I first got the design sheet for Denia's second form in Wuthering Waves, I had repeated this imposing voiceline in my head countless times. Now, I have finally brought this character into reality, using the camera shutter to capture a set of visuals featuring a dark clock and a gothic throne. As the cosplayer in front of the lens, today I’d like to share the behind-the-scenes thoughts and styling details behind this shoot.
The costume configuration this time is incredibly rich in detail. The most striking element is the long, wavy silver-white wig, featuring a top bun paired with an asymmetrical large white bow and blue-gold side hairpieces that show great depth under the lights. To complement the hair, I specifically adjusted my makeup to keep the eyes looking clearer and more translucent; paired with light-colored contact lenses, this helped balance out the heaviness of the dark-toned costume. The dark star-trail mark on the neck is a small detail I particularly love in this styling—drawn right there, it adds an aura of mysterious power to the character.
The main outfit is a deep blue sleeveless dress accented with golden lines and irregular magenta patches, giving it a strong designer look without feeling cluttered. To match the dress, I selected semi-sheer off-white arm warmers trimmed with black lace, while my hands wore long deep-blue printed gloves featuring light-colored ripples and star-trail motifs—both the texture and pattern aligned seamlessly with the second form's aesthetic. Of course, the most striking visual extension in the photos is the stocking outfit: grey-blue pantyhose with white water-ripple patterns paired with black glossy cross-strap platform shoes. During the shoot, I paid special attention to capturing the reflections off the patent leather and metal buckles, which greatly elevated the overall image quality.
The gear used for this shoot was a Sony mirrorless camera (Sony A7M5) paired with the FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II lens. In this dark and cool purple environment, the wide aperture showed its clear advantage; even under relatively complex indoor lighting, it ensured smooth highlight-to-shadow transitions on the face, sharply separating the subject's outline and costume details from the set. The giant clock and intricate black high-back throne in the background were softly blurred, making the subject stand out even more in the frame for this anime-style photography.
When it comes to the set design, the venue was brimming with atmosphere. In the background stood a massive Roman numeral clock, whose interlocking gears resonated strongly with the character's suppressed and domineering demeanor. Beside it were dry branches, golden frames, black birdcages, and a vintage candelabra. The black leather throne felt rock-hard to sit on, but it radiated regal authority on camera. I sat facing forward, turned sideways, or rested a single hand on the armrest to project that cool and commanding presence. When shooting closer to the ground, I tried more elongated poses, such as extending my legs forward or looking back over my shoulder, which better highlighted the layered outfit and leg contours.
The core emotion this set sought to express is "sweet yet cool." While qualities like "good girl" and "bad girl" seem contrasting, they blend harmoniously in Denia. Her silver-white hair and light makeup offer a soft and sweet visual feel, but when seated on the throne or delivering that disdainful, commanding gaze, her icy and self-assured aura immediately overpowers the sweetness. Throughout the shoot, I continually fine-tuned my expression and posture to achieve that delicate equilibrium in every frame.
Players of Wuthering Waves will likely resonate deeply with this character's voicelines and lore, and as a cosplayer, being able to bring such a multifaceted personality to life through lighting, costume, and makeup is truly fulfilling. Although the shoot took quite a toll physically, the photographer utilized the precise eye-autofocus of the Sony mirrorless camera to capture many fleeting, vivid expressions, making all our hard work worthwhile. The charm of the second form lies in that impending burst of power, and I hope everyone can feel this character's unique presence through this photo set.
