When I first got the fabric and pattern for this costume, I kept thinking about how to photograph it to maximize its tailored cuts. The navy blue of the jacket reveals a deep, rich texture under warm light, while the white fabric on the shoulder panels and the metallic piping along the cuffs heavily test pre-shoot lighting setup—a slight misalignment would make them look dull and dim. Therefore, we specifically chose a time window when sunlight shone diagonally into the corridor. The white lace trim around the neckline, paired with the emerald gem brooch, serves as the visual anchor for the upper body; every time I looked down to adjust them, that subtle sense of ceremony naturally bridged the distance between me and this look.

To complement this vintage style outfit with an academy flair, I chose a dark brown hard-shell suitcase as the core prop. Not only is it a heavy-hitting element in the composition, but it also anchors the story tone, evoking thoughts of departure, long travels, or a journey about to unfold. In the shots taken around the staircase, this case ingeniously balances the negative space at the bottom of the frame, working with the drape of the pleated skirt to give the static image a sense of impending movement. In the corridor shots, the blue umbrella handle resting over the suitcase and the folded white cloth add lived-in details, preventing the overall look from feeling overly rigid.

Choosing the location took considerable thought; the European classical-style white stone staircase, paired with the black-and-white geometric marble parquet floor, achieved harmonious unity with the costume in both color and mood. White window frames and light yellow walls provided excellent diffuse reflection, softening skin tones while maintaining three-dimensional facial contours. There was no need for forced or complex poses—simply standing along the stair treads or walking quietly through the corridor with the suitcase naturally allowed that quiet, slightly detached atmosphere to radiate.

When it comes to emotional expression, much like the delicate thoughts inside people's hearts, sometimes not every word needs to be spoken aloud. In portraying this character, eye contact is perhaps far more crucial than physical gestures. I avoided exaggerated expressions of joy or sadness, opting instead to maintain a relatively calm, restrained, yet focused state. This subtle emotion is tricky to strike, as being too cold feels hollow while being too warm disrupts the character setting. I particularly love the composition of Photo 1, standing on the stairs holding the suitcase; the frame is perfectly balanced, my state feels most natural, and the texture of warm and cool light intersecting across hair strands aligns seamlessly with the mood of the entire scene.

The shoot was naturally not without its share of unexpected hitches. Drafts blowing through the corridor posed a huge challenge, constantly messing up my long hair or lifting layers of the pleated skirt, forcing us to frantically snap photos during brief lulls in the wind. Under strong backlighting, wig strands were also prone to producing lens flare, requiring the photographer to continually adjust angles to dodge overexposed, messy reflections. After several rounds of trial and error, we gradually understood how light flowed through the space, capturing these moments with the most pleasing light and shadow layers.

For me, cosplaying characters in this style isn't merely about wearing the costume; it's about leveraging scenes and props to recreate that distinct classical aesthetic. From selecting materials for accessories and demanding strict precision in lighting and angles during shooting, to unifying color saturation and shadow areas in post-processing—every single step impacts the emotional delivery of the final photos. Although the process is intricate, seeing that timeless, retro elegance in the finished images makes all the careful preparation worthwhile.
