Headed back to the National Exhibition and Convention Center for BW this year, and the Shanghai weather held up nicely—the cool front following the typhoon made walking the floor vastly more comfortable. Prioritizing agility and lightweight handling, I carried the classic pairing of the Sony A7M5 and 24-70mm F2.8 GM II. Slung around the neck without strain, it allowed effortless snapshots without wearing out the wrist. As a cosplayer, I prepped several distinct looks this year—a pink-haired dress, twin-tail maid attire, and this red-and-black plaid ensemble with black stockings. The halls were bustling with wonderfully detailed cosplayers everywhere. Waiting in lines at popular booths, swapping photos, collecting freebies, sharing gaming news, and hauling tote bags packed with giveaways made for such a joyful convention experience.
The compact setup made an immense difference. In past years, heavy gear left my arms aching by day's end, but the 24-70mm focal range handled full-body portraits and tight close-ups with fluid ease. At the Sony booth against the holographic floral backdrop, wearing the red-and-black skirt and black stockings accented by the Black stockings leg garter, I struck a single-leg raised stance that the photographer snapped flawlessly. The A7M5 tracked focus with blistering speed, never faltering amidst the crowds—no waiting on detection; once a pose was set, a single shutter click instantly yielded sharp, high-res captures.
Despite the layered red-and-black plaid skirt, the cool weather and venue air conditioning kept things breezy. Being stopped for poses wherever I went allowed me to balance the thrill of exploring as a cosplayer with modeling for Convention photos. Effortlessly shifting between street-style snapshots and posed captures kept my energy buoyant and stress-free throughout. Returning home to a memory card packed with satisfying shots truly refreshed my entire weekend—a thoroughly fulfilling cosplay experience before heading back into the workweek.
