Today, I finally completed this official Maomao cosplay shoot from The Apothecary Diaries! Let's dive straight into the preparation process. First was the wig: Maomao's hair color is a distinctive deep teal-green. The front bangs had to be trimmed impeccably neat, while the long hair on both sides was braided into low-hanging plaits, finished at the ends with green mini hair ties into tassel-like tufts. To elevate character details, I accessorized with delicate golden floral-leaf hairpins and long drop earrings featuring green teardrop pendants. Setting this hair for the outdoors took considerable effort, particularly ensuring the curvature of the braids fell naturally without looking stiff.
Regarding the attire, the outer layer is a pink, wide-sleeved ancient-style robe crafted with refined damask jacquard motifs and lined with pale green piping along the cuffs. The inner collar is reddish-brown, forming rich color layering against the white inner lining and the light blue fabric across the chest. The sleeves on this robe are quite voluminous, so deliberate attention to the drape of the fabric was necessary during posing to avoid looking bulky. I gently adjusted the outer neckline to better reflect her signature effortless yet reserved demeanor.
The location was set in an outdoor courtyard, mainly utilizing a stone balustrade backed by verdant shrubs. The sunlight on that day was magnificent—bathed in the warm golden glow of the setting sun, quintessential golden hour lighting. I had the photographer leverage the raking light to capture a shot of me leaning against the stone railing. In the frame, my torso tilts forward slightly, right hand resting flat upon the stone, while my left hand rises palm-upward in a gesture of catching the light. My gaze tilts downward with an air of contemplation and inquiry. Maomao is fundamentally intelligent, calm, and boundlessly curious about herbs and poisons, yet remarkably restrained in daily conduct. Thus, for facial expression control, I avoided overt smiling, favoring subtly reddened eye makeup and natural lip tones paired with a serene, almost detached countenance.
Shooting outdoors was certainly challenging because lighting shifts swiftly and the wind constantly stirs voluminous sleeves. To capture that fleeting instant where the left hand cradles the light beam while soft chiaroscuro brushes across the face, we adjusted angles repeatedly. While sustaining the pose, I had to calibrate the degree of my body's tilt to keep posture fluid. The tactile quality of this light bathing the pink fabric was stunning, infusing the entire frame with narrative depth.
The entire shoot granted me a deeper appreciation of Maomao. Though her garments feature tender pastels, embodying her requires maintaining clear-headed focus. From braiding the wig and smoothing the garments to controlling body language before the lens, every detail demands patience. Bringing this unique, captivating maiden to life on an afternoon bathed in perfect sunlight was a truly fulfilling endeavor. Looking at the final photos now, the setting sun and gentle breeze of that day felt just right.
