[Dusk cosplay] Aloof Ink-Wash in Arknights: A Chinese-Style Photography Rendering with Cyan Tulle and Dragon Horns

This Arknights Dusk cosplay project had been in preparation for quite some time. From pattern-making to prop curation, every single phase demanded careful deliberation. Dusk's concept leans deeply into traditional Chinese ink-wash aesthetics, so when commissioning the costume, I specifically emphasized textile selection with the tailor. The complete attire consists of multi-tiered sheer tulle: the outermost layer is an ombré cyan-green gossamer, draped over a pure white inner lining. To keep the silhouette from feeling monochromatic, crimson cord ties and flowing tassels were introduced. While this airy fabric catches illumination with wonderful translucency, it can easily look flimsy on camera, setting high demands on studio lighting. The key light had to be exceptionally soft so the textiles would yield their true tactile richness.

For hair styling, we sculpted a black base wig spliced with cyan-green extensions toward the ends. To preserve structural volume, several hidden hairpieces were integrated. The dragon horn headpieces overhead were custom-crafted in advance—cast from resin and finished in subtle ombré lacquering, complemented by delicate pearls and metallic filigree so the headpiece exuded mythical majesty without becoming gaudy. Elven ear prosthetics paired with crimson contact lenses anchored an overarching cool-toned palette for the makeup.

The blue special-effects gradient on my hands was applied personally brushstroke by brushstroke, blending blue cream eyeshadow with body paints to achieve a delicate gradient toward the fingertips, accessorized with alternating blue-and-red beaded bracelets. For props, I prepared a traditional calligraphy brush, a round silk fan, and several hand scrolls. The paintings across the scrolls were custom-painted landscape scenes by a friend, elevating the realism of the scene. To mirror authentic brushwork postures, I rehearsed the grip repeatedly to ensure the wrist lines looked natural and relaxed.

Staging the Ancient style cosplay set required substantial effort as well. The backdrop was layered with three tiers of sheer white calligraphy curtains printed with classical script beforehand. To evoke the gentle flutter of wind through silk, crew members gently fanned reflectors behind the fabric. The floor was laid with woven bamboo mats, arranged with faux scholar rocks and blue-and-white porcelain vases. The most labor-intensive element was the dry-ice ground fog: to keep misty vapor creeping close to the floor, multiple dry-ice units were stationed around the set perimeter. During takes, I had to balance within the narrow gaps between garden stones while controlling the sweeping gown so it wouldn't trip me up. To capture the billowing momentum of the robes, I executed multiple turns and sleeve flourishes to send the long silk sashes unfurling in mid-air. Because the wide-sleeved robe was quite heavy, each flourish required core torque from the waist.

The lighting setup for this shoot was paramount. We placed a warm rim light to the subject's side-rear to cleanly carve out the edges of the figure and translucent textiles, while a front softbox illuminated the facial plane. The cool tones of the misty backdrop formed a striking contrast against fair skin tones. Although the shoot was physically demanding, seeing the fabric textures and scenic mood preserved with such painterly fidelity proved that every bit of preparation was worthwhile.
