[Machu cosplay] Gundam GQUUUUUX: The Crimson Aloofness

This shoot was an attempt to recreate the styles of Machu and Amate Yuzuriha from Gundam GQUUUUUX. The pure orange studio backdrop formed a cohesive unity with the character's orange hair and orange backpack. What appears to be a simple ensemble actually required extensive preparation. The white V-neck sweater paired with a bright blue pleated skirt delivers dynamic youthful energy, while the black buckled boots inject a rugged mecha edge into the entire look.

In terms of hair and makeup, to convey the character's cool yet slightly bewildered nature, I specifically chose light grayish-blue colored contacts to complement the distinct white streak in the orange hair. Against the orange background, the translucence of the skin contrasted sharply with the cool blue skirt. Such large fields of saturated color required balancing highlights and shadows across the face to prevent skin from appearing overly sallow. At the same time, maintaining the collar's fur texture under studio lights without blowing out the highlights was essential.

The white helmet prop with red dots was the heaviest burden in my hands. Initially, my poses looked stiff from straining too hard, but following advice from photographer Hongbai, I relaxed my arm muscles and used leverage to cradle it, finally capturing an effortless, self-assured presence.

Regarding my interpretation of both Machu and Amate Yuzuriha, I tried distinguishing the two identities through subtle shifts in gaze and posture. The frontal hands-on-hips shot needed to project a fierce, combative defiance; leaning forward slightly allowed the low-angle perspective to elongate the leg lines, which is why I love this shot so much and selected it as the cover. Meanwhile, the one-legged hop and back-kick poses sought a balance between energy and motion—adjusting the instep and center of gravity to catch the mid-air freeze-frame was a true test of bodily control.

The photographer continuously offered fine-tuning cues throughout the session—such as dropping the shoulders slightly and extending the hands holding the phone and backpack outward to keep the composition from feeling too tense. Especially in the over-the-shoulder look, the neck and shoulder lines had to be as relaxed as possible to exude that untamed, detached aura. The interaction with props was delightful as well; the orange backpack on my back almost melted into the backdrop, creating a fascinating visual effect.

The solid orange background puts the color purity of the garments to the test, making the blue-and-white outfit pop remarkably against such vast warm tones. With no superfluous set pieces, the narrative relied purely on expressions and movement to convey emotion. Whether channeling the tension before battle or casually walking with helmet in hand, I immersed myself in the character's mental world, allowing modern wardrobe textures to clash against the sci-fi setting. Though exhausting, seeing the final outcome swept away all fatigue.
