For this on-location shoot, we headed straight to Dali's Erhai Lake, where the expansive waters and distant mountains flawlessly mirror the poetic atmosphere of Violet Evergarden. Preparing this Violet Evergarden ensemble took considerable thought: the inner white gown boasts multiple voluminous layers, overlaid with a tailored deep-toned cropped uniform jacket. Together with gloves, knee-high boots, and the hefty vintage leather suitcase, navigating the gravelly shoreline was surprisingly arduous. The wig required meticulous prep as well—the blonde braided buns and red ribbon ties tangled easily under gusty coastal winds, necessitating thorough combing at every new setup.

Daytime light was remarkably vibrant; blue skies, drifting clouds, and soaring seagulls rendered the palette wonderfully rich. The leaping capture in Photo 2 actually took nearly twenty attempts. Clutching the suitcase in one hand while fighting to stabilize the lace-trimmed sky-blue parasol in the other against fierce winds, every leap sent the gown billowing outward. It demanded seizing that split second where the canopy bloomed open, feet cleared the ground, and the skirt flared into its most graceful arc. Even though the suitcase handle left my fingers reddened and raw, witnessing that airborne silhouette on the camera screen made every trial feel utterly worthwhile. Photo 1 opted for a wide landscape panorama—standing in profile on the shore just as seagulls skimmed across the water. Environmental portraiture of this scale requires profound patience from both model and photographer, waiting for the wind to gather and the birds to glide past.

Shooting along the shimmering waters in the afternoon presented its own trials. Photo 4 was captured directly into backlight, where sunlight scattered across the ripples in dense glittering specular points. The dazzling glare made gazing into the lens almost unbearable, compelling me to cast my eyes down toward the water or turn my profile away. Arranging the hemline across the pebble beach also meant maneuvering around weeds and jagged stones, while sustaining core engagement to prevent wardrobe malfunctions.

The most breathtaking phase arrived with twilight. Violet-red evening glow painted the horizon as city lights flickered to life at the foot of distant mountains. With natural light fading fast, we deployed the vintage lantern as our key illumination. Photo 3 was lit entirely by the warm glow radiating from the lantern onto my face and dress folds. Positioning the lantern was critical: holding it too low cast unflattering jawline shadows, while holding it too high blew out the fabric highlights. I had to continually recalibrate the bend in my arm, positioning myself in deep shade so the lantern carved a crisp warm-cool chiaroscuro from the side. Shooting with a lantern by the shore after dark also demanded vigilance against slick waterline rocks and incoming tides.

Spanning bright daylight to dusk, this shoot endured both scorching sun and biting breezes. Though the attire avoids overt allure, this modest, dignified classical silhouette—coupled with the vast expanse and glistening ripples of Erhai Lake—evokes a resilient, tranquil narrative depth. Reviewing the frames and seeing seagulls, the lantern, and skirts fluttering on the wind, I feel deeply fulfilled knowing this long journey yielded such timeless, cherished images.
