[Mash cosplay] Autumn Ginkgo and Lilies, Perseverance in the Name of Love

Let me share some insights and behind-the-scenes stories about this Mash cosplay shoot. I mainly want to talk about the preparation work for this shoot and how we captured the character's pure yet slightly melancholic temperament.

First is the makeup and styling. The core visual features of Mash are her pink-purple short hair and purple eyes. To recreate this translucent feel, I put a lot of effort into the base makeup, trying to make the skin look fair and clear. I didn't overemphasize contour shadows, but kept the makeup flat and soft. I chose a light pink-purple wig with a lot of volume, but it needed careful thinning and smoothing, especially the length of the bangs, which had to just cover the edge of the eyes without blocking the line of sight. The contact lenses I chose were a slightly translucent purple, which automatically lit up in good lighting, making the gaze more natural.

The matching of costumes and props was a major focus this time. We prepared a white off-the-shoulder dress with lace edges, looking very clean. To echo the character's aura, we specifically brought white lilies as embellishments. The scent of lilies was very pleasant in the ginkgo forest, and they served as excellent foreground or facial decorations. Considering the overall picture was mostly light-colored and yellow-green, we also prepared a transparent umbrella. This was not only a great prop but also created wonderful reflections under the light.

I must say, photographer @Wenhao Loves Photography put a lot of thought into choosing the shooting location. The golden yellow of ginkgo leaves is very rich; if you wear dark clothes, it's easy to be swallowed by the background, but a white dress stands out beautifully against the yellow backdrop. We used the DSLR's large aperture to blur the background ginkgo leaves into clusters of bokeh. During the shoot, we tried many standing positions, such as holding the umbrella high and letting the leaves on the umbrella canopy cover the lower half of the face, using foreground blurring to express a sense of peeking.

To showcase the character's delicate and expectant feeling, the photographer guided me to slow down my movements. Especially during composition, we utilized perspective; for instance, in a few shots where I reached out toward the lens, the focal length change gives the audience a sense of immersion. In the reclining photo chosen as the cover, we adjusted the camera angle so I was lying sideways on the fallen leaves, legs naturally crossed. The advantage of this pose is that it elongates the body lines while showcasing the white stockings and high heels I wore. Combined with the natural draping of the skirt hem, the overall look is both pure and features slightly sexy lines; the shooting angle captured this perfectly without making the frame feel too overpowering.

Actually, Portrait photography like cosplay is not easy to do. Whether it's conveying emotions through the eyes or pausing during movements, everything needs to be fine-tuned bit by bit. Especially this time, with many natural elements in the location and changeable weather with fluctuating light, we constantly searched for suitable angles in the woods. But the final Ginkgo leaf photoshoot results are truly satisfying. Sometimes, this delicate emotional expression doesn't require too many exaggerated movements; just standing quietly or lying down is enough.
