The process of shooting this Medusa cosplay was actually much more detail-oriented than expected. The initial decision to cosplay this character stemmed from my deep appreciation for Medusa's aura in Fate—both cold and tinged with a touch of tragedy. To faithfully recreate this feeling, a lot of effort went into the makeup and styling. First was the wig: the long purple hair is very long and tangles easily, requiring repeated combing before shooting to maintain its sleek drape and airy feel. The red mark on the forehead was hand-painted stroke by stroke using specialized face paint; because facial sweat could easily smudge it, I had to touch it up several times.
In terms of costume, the glossy black bodysuit was a major challenge. The material is quite slick, making putting it on and taking it off a real workout. Moreover, because the fabric reflects light intensely, it placed extremely high demands on studio lighting. The photographer had to constantly adjust the angles of the softboxes to bring out the sleek texture without making it look overly shiny or greasy. During the shoot, a white round platform was used as a prop, paired with metal chains on the left, effectively adding layered depth and a sense of fateful destiny to the composition.
However, holding the poses was by far the hardest part. Due to the low surface friction of the outfit, sitting on the smooth round pedestal while maintaining an elegant yet relaxed posture severely tested core strength. Following the photographer's guidance, I naturally extended my legs along the edge of the platform with one leg bent, resting one cheek on my hand, striving to convey a languid yet defiant state. The long purple hair draped naturally across the platform and shoulders, paired with slightly downcast eyes to bring out that aloof detachment unique to Medusa. Even though my legs grew numb after holding this pose for a long time, the moment I saw the finished photos, I felt everything was completely worth it.
In portraying the character, I didn't want to simplify her into pure coldness; rather, I hoped to convey through my eyes her sense of helplessness and the inner struggle of yearning for companionship, which kept me in a focused and tranquil state of mind throughout the shoot. After finishing the session, looking at the black-and-purple tones captured on camera, complemented by high heels and leather gloves, the overall cool and alluring vibe was spot-on. This studio shoot was immensely satisfying and gave me a deeper understanding of this character. I hope to have the opportunity to explore her different forms in the future.
