Putting on this uniform and standing in the venue of the CCG Expo, the character immersion came instantly. This time it was Asuka's classic look, and a lot of preparation went in beforehand. To match the refined aesthetic of Neon Genesis Evangelion, I specifically adjusted the wig, raising the height of the Red twin tails slightly and adding hair padding underneath so the overall head shape appeared fuller without collapsing. The red hair accessories were also repositioned and secured firmly with bobby pins, as crowds at conventions can easily cause them to loosen while walking around. The blue colored contact lenses were one of the souls of this look; once put on, my gaze instantly turned sharp and cool. To coordinate with false eyelashes and eyeliner, the eye makeup took a full forty minutes—elongating the outer corners and applying individual lower lash clusters to achieve that deep, doll-like gaze on camera.
Regarding the outfit, the white undershirt has great quality and structure, and I tied the red bow at the collar myself, adjusting it back and forth several times for symmetry. The outer blue pinafore vest has great proportions and looks very slimming. It was extremely crowded on the day of the convention; fortunately, I chose a breathable fabric, otherwise prolonged shooting would have felt suffocating.
After communicating with the photographer, we decided to shoot a set of photos with clear visual hierarchy. The close-up featured strong lighting effects; the photographer used dual red and blue speedlights, casting red and blue light across either side of the cheeks, making the gaze appear remarkably piercing. This shot was actually the hardest to capture because focus had to be locked strictly on the pupils without shaking—even the slightest movement would break the intensity.
The other shots included half-body portraits and resting-chin poses. The chin-resting shot was meant to convey the character's confidence and composure; posing required controlling the downward intensity of the gaze—neither too fierce nor lacking commanding aura. There was also a shot holding a small plush doll prop, a matching official merchandise piece chosen specifically to add fun interactive charm without leaving hand gestures feeling empty.
Throughout the shoot, passersby kept asking for photos together. Although keeping poses consistently was tiring, meeting fellow fans who love this character was delightful. Even though the convention was exhausting without rest from morning to night, seeing the final finished photos made everything worthwhile. Outfit details and the precision of the eye makeup were restored to the best of my ability. For post-processing, I helped make minor adjustments to keep the skin tone translucent, fair, and slightly cool-toned. Retouching focused on preserving authentic skin texture to avoid losing realism from over-smoothing. This photo set documented the vibrant convention atmosphere and marked a fresh interpretation of this character for me.
This Anime-style photography experience leveled up my cosplay portrayal skills considerably, especially in handling complex lens lighting effects and emotional expression.
