[Rei Ayanami cosplay] Capturing the Texture of Neon Genesis Evangelion with Flash at a Themed Cafe

Getting straight to the point: the reflective effect of the merch in those two straight-out-of-camera raw photos was truly stunning. The halo refracted as the flash hit the holographic laser film genuinely looked like an artwork inside a Louvre display case. This shoot accidentally uncovered this lighting trick: casting a side base light using a ring light or smartphone flash against a backdrop of dark blue and white textures creates an exceptionally gorgeous spectrum of light spots.

Regarding the merchandise, the illustration artwork itself was drawn with meticulous detail. The laser holographic effect of the round can badge reflected a rainbow under the flash, and the fine blue glitter along the diamond-shaped badge was also exquisite. However, taking photos directly off the camera screen was quite limiting, so I casually snapped one with my phone's raw camera—which is P3 shown in the set—and that reflection is something you can rewatch endlessly. As for P2, which I jokingly call "heavily retouched goddess seeking love," my editing approach mainly refined skin texture. Since direct frontal flash easily causes overexposed skin reflections, I did localized slimming and skin smoothing, while making subtle adjustments to hand details, preserving much of the cool-toned ambiance from the blue-and-white setting.

Turning back to the outfit, this lace halterneck dress featured in the shoot is packed with details. The fabric is lightweight, with delicate white lace embroidery across the chest. Paired with gold neck accessories and red contact lenses, the overall look blended seamlessly before the themed cafe's light blue walls. To recreate Rei Ayanami cosplay faithfully, I used hair styling spray to sculpt the wig, maintaining a natural fluffiness, and putting it on went very smoothly. The blue specialty drink on the table was also ordered in the cafe; its color harmonized perfectly with the overall palette, and holding it as a prop enriched the frame's color depth.

The reason I emphasized flash photography for anime merch at the beginning is that under dim indoor lighting, ordinary photos of merchandise often look dull and flat. Using instantaneous high-exposure flash brightens reflective materials remarkably—making the texture of holographic rainbow films or aurora paper instantly pop with dimensional life. Interacting with the white lace on the dress, it created an ethereal and divine dreaminess. This shoot was also about exploring ways to photograph clear card sleeves, laser badges, and fine-glitter pins; slightly adjusting the angle of the light source brings out those water-ripple-like colorful refractions in the photos.

Overall, the experience shooting at the cafe was wonderful. Holding the blue drink in hand amidst surrounding illustrations of the same theme maximized the immersive atmosphere instantly. The fine glitter on the diamond-shaped merchandise photographed in darker spots almost resembled a starry sky, which took quite some effort to angle properly. Although refining styling details and post-processing took considerable time, I am personally very pleased with the light and shadow texture of this photo set. Continuing to test new looks has brought valuable insights through practicing across various lighting conditions. I hope this Cosplay photography set and write-up allow everyone to feel the unique charm of the Prismland costume design and the distinctive essence of this character from Neon Genesis Evangelion.
