[Asuka Cosplay] Neon Genesis Evangelion: Summer Poolside Charm

Last year at Hirakata Park, I did a custom-designed Asuka Cosplay photoshoot, and with the summer vibes in the air, I'm sharing my thoughts and feelings on the shoot. This was a fairly bold custom outfit, as the original costume designs are quite heavy and not well-suited for an outdoor waterside setting. So I went straight for a black halter one-piece swimsuit with cutout strappy details on the sides—this design fits the body closely, and the black fabric offers a better texture. The red jacket is made of a silky fabric that isn't too stuffy to drape over in the summer, and keeping the zipper half-open makes the arm lines look more slender on camera. The denim shorts have a looser fit for comfort, and the rolled-hem design makes the legs appear straighter. For the straw hat accessory, I chose a red ribbon to echo the jacket, with natural, casual frayed edges along the brim. A lot of thought went into this styling: tilting the front brim of the hat slightly down flatters the facial contours, and paired with the red choker, it draws the visual focus upward. The cut of the black swimsuit was crucial—considering fabric folds in both squatting and standing postures, a snug fit was chosen so it wouldn't easily lose its shape during shooting. The contrasting red, black, and blue palette represents a classic primary color play, making the red pop vibrantly against the blue pool backdrop.

The reflection off the pool at Hirakata Park was incredible, naturally creating a refreshing, cool atmosphere in the photos. The shooting day was sun-drenched; standing by the pool made facial shadows easy to appear due to the lighting angle, so photographer Tudouni primarily used surface water bounce light and reflectors for fill light. This made skin tones look translucent and brought out the blue in the eyes. The rich blue of the water created a striking visual contrast with the red jacket. Being at a water park, the outfit leaned toward casual everyday wear rather than complex zippers and straps, making it feel much more authentic.

I dedicated a lot of care to facial expression management. The character lore defines her as lively yet tsundere, so I intentionally went for a slightly petulant, moody expression—not a straightforward sweet smile, but a half-profile look with a slightly cold, distant gaze, creating more tension. In an Anime convention environment, candid snapshots in a natural state often produce better photos than rigid posing. Tudouni understood my vision well, suggesting angles like simulating walking by the water or touching the hat brim that fit the vibe perfectly. Finally, the shot squatting by the poolside was taken from a lowered perspective, which not only elongated leg proportions but also gave the composition a very full feel. In post-processing, retaining costume texture was key—especially the swimsuit fabric and jacket sheen—avoiding over-smoothing to preserve the natural waterside light and shadow. The red-and-blue color contrast was kept from distorting, preserving a translucent feel. My post-processing concept aimed to convey the crisp freshness of a summer water park; while petulance is her signature trait, the summer sun and cool ripples made the overall atmosphere even more vibrant.

When cosplaying at an Anime convention, the most important things are having fun and feeling comfortable. Putting this outfit together preserved the character's core recognizability while seamlessly fitting the summer water-play vibe.
